One of our favourite blogs, PoliticalTheatrics recently made a post about the murdered in Gaza. PT has a screenshot and link to a comprehensive list of those murdered by Israel which is available to download online. We will include this link below, but we also want to take this one step further by telling a small story about the murdered children in Gaza First this:

Political Theatrics : We have seen the bodies and heard the screams but now we get to stare at the names of these innocent men,women and children.Spread this far and wide; Let the world know of these people and that we shall never forget them.

You can download the full document here and read all the names. Now we want to tell a wee story here, pull up a chair. Last January during the Gaza Genocide, people in Ireland were outraged. We have always felt a close tie to the Palestinians, and also the Lebanese, Syrians and even the Iranians (think US Dictator Shah of Iran)

So, as some of you will know, there are pivotal moments within the struggles oppressed people face. These moments are not always the ones where the most people die, nor are they always the most horrendous. But they are the ones that cause even the most non-political, non-violent, non-believer into taking action. They are the moments when massive amounts of hitherto non-involved people see the writing on the wall and decide “no more.” For people in the North of Ireland this was Bloody Sunday when the British paratroopers murdered civilians on a march through Creggan in the Bogside of Derry. After that, people from all walks of life qued up to join the IRA. And thus began the long war against Britain. How does this tie in to murdered children in Gaza? Keep reading;o)

I tell you this because Bloody Sunday is remembered every year in Derry where a huge march is held on the same route of the original march. Only last year it all changed for the very first time in history. The families of the victims decided bravely to dedicate the march to the victims in Palestine. You can see a video of the march here. In the video it is important to note Holding the Sinn Fein Solidarity Banner are Raymond McCartney MLA Sinn Fein jailed for 17 years by the British and also a former Hunger striker at the Maze prison, Martina Anderson MLA Sinn Fein Foyle who spent 13 ½ years in a British Jail, Gerry McMonagle Clr Sinn Fein, Gerry MacLochlainn clr Derry Sinn Fein who spent 3 years in a British Jail. Gerry Adams MP MLA President Sinn Fein interned and jailed numerous times, and Martin McGuinness, Deputy First Minister, Sinn Fein, again jailed numerous times by the British. Sounds like Palestine.

I traveled to the march last year to witness this historic event for Palestine, and what I remember most is not so much the sea of Palestinian flags being carried by tiny Irish children up to old age pensioners,nor the Palestinian flags waving in the wind as the Irish National Anthem played, truly a stunning event. But what I most remember was the wall at William Street where the march ended.

Upon arrival at the wall, it was covered with white A4 sized papers, each one had the name of a child murdered by Israel in Gaza. Some had photographs of these beautiful children alive in happier times, obviously taken by professional photographers for display in their homes by the proud parents. Not unlike what we all do in our own homes, never thinking for one moment the photo may one day come to symbolize the death of that child on a wall in a far away place such as Ireland. Even today writing this post, it is hard to remember the emotion of that day.

I stood staring at the names on the wall, although this is not a complete list of all the dead children as information at the time was hard to come by. I couldn't help but notice that the childrens names were plastered surrounding a memorial plaque to one of our IRA volunteers; John Starrs, Aged 19 from Derry, killed on duty fighting the British occupation force. It struck me that in death, a Catholic Irish freedom fighter would one day be united, in death, on a wall, with a muslim child from Palestine, both of whom died without having freedom, justice and equality. I was choked with emotion. And little did I know that months later when two friends joined the "Hope" convoy to Gaza, they would meet a woman on the convoy who saw my photos of that wall in Derry with the names of the murdered children online, and by seeing them realised her family members were killed. Oh God, how awful that we must be linked in such a way, all of Ireland's dead all of Palestine's dead. I wondered if the day will ever come when the major events of our years will not always be focused on our dead, for both our countries.

As the main speakers of the event began their speeches, I remained at the wall determined to read every single name and age before leaving. I owed them that. And the world owes them that too. So I offer you the chance to meet them (click to enlarge photos):

IDF soldier says of Palestinians in Gaza:

"You feel like an infantile little kid with a magnifying glass looking at ants, burning them."

Reality breaks through into Israel's alternate universe and is once again ignored.

Members of the most "moral" army in the world recently published reports covering how they were encouraged to murder Palestinians for the Mother Land Israel. Although I have no clue why reporters, or anyone else for that matter, bother to even ask any Israeli official for a response as it's always the same. Right on que Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak replied (Can you guess the answer folks?) "Criticism directed at the IDF by one organization or another is inappropriate and is directed at the wrong place."

No fair Barak the Whack, He fooled us by adding this: "and is directed at the wrong place" to the "standard" retort, gosh darn it! Well, in fairness he has a partial point, he is right that it is not just Israel responsible, it is the United States for supplying Israel with weapons of mass destruction which it then used not for defense but rather to collectively punish an entire population. But the blame does not stop there, no it doesn't. The policy of "look the other way" adopted by the majority of influential countries like Britain, Canada, France, Germany and others that has existed for years towards Israel, they are culpable as well for the Gaza Holocaust. Israeli soldiers who served in the invasion of Gaza in January were instructed to “shoot first, ask later,” a policy that led to killings of innocents, according to testimonies released by the organization Breaking the Silence on Wednesday.

The Israeli organization published the interviews with some 30 soldiers in a booklet and on its website.

"Better hit an innocent than hesitate to target an enemy," is how one soldier explained the instructions given soldiers before the ground invasion that began in the second week of the three week offensive.

“The minute we got to our starting line, we simply began to fire at suspect places,” said another.

"In urban warfare, anyone is your enemy. No innocents."

Another soldier offered the following description on the briefings: “At briefings on places I entered, we were told that if we engage at close range, we should know that normally, at night the Arab is asleep in his bed and has no business outdoors at this time, so we should really be careful.”

(So Arabs are not into the "Night Life" what a racist statement. There are hundreds of legitimate reasons for an Arab to be outside after dark, how moronic. According to that "logic" if America was invaded and you ran out of milk after dark, then you dared to nip to your local 7-11 shop YOU ARE A TERRORIST. Suddenly the phrase "Got Milk" has a whole new meaning)MORE:

“We weren't told outright to shoot anything we saw moving but that was the implication,” the soldier testified, “I asked, ‘What if I see a girl outside?’ She has no business being outside. "So what do I do?" Check if she's armed – then shoot her.”

Another soldier described carrying out the same policy, shooting an elderly woman for no other reason than that she was outside of her house in an area controlled by the army.

Some soldiers descriptions went even further, describing the dehumanization of the Palestinians: "You feel like an infantile little kid with a magnifying glass looking at ants, burning them."

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 1,500 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli onslaught, the vast majority of them civilians. Israel maintains that only 1,166 and only 295 dead were civilians. Israel however counted policemen as combatants although they are classified as noncombatants under international law.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak responded to the Breaking the Silence document on Wednesday saying, "Criticism directed at the IDF by one organization or another is inappropriate and is directed at the wrong place. The IDF is one of the most ethical armies in the world and acts in accordance with the highest moral code." source

Israel Foils Potential Terrorist Plot

Thanks to Israel’s very quick thinking, a plot to annihilate Israel via the Erez border crossing was averted. The threat in question, was a 5 month old Palestinian baby, who was accompanying the mother and 5 year old sister who were traveling to Israel for medical treatment. As the IDF policy is to consider all Palestinian children as potential terrorists, the threat from the tiny but possibly dangerous 5 month old was deemed to be far too dangerous for the Israeli officials to allow the baby to pass through into Israel alongside the Mother and sister. An IDF spokesman stated that it's not about size, it's about the danger of the tiny baby's ability to spew deadly baby spit-up onto Israelis. A threat Israel was just not willing to risk.

Israel refuses to let 5-month old baby from Gaza leave the Strip with his mother and sister

Israeli forces at the Erez crossing stopped a 5-month old baby from crossing into Israel. His mother and five-year old sister both had a permission to leave the Strip, so the 5-year old girl could receive medical treatment in Israel.

As Israeli troops refused the infant to enter Israel, the mother and both her children were forced to turn back home without receiving medical treatment and might be unable to receive another permission to enter Israel.The five-year old girl needed medical help in Israel, as doctors in Gaza were unable to diagnose why the girl has been suffering from chronic fevers.The mother decided to take her baby with her, because she didn’t know how long the treatment would take, assuming that a five-month old infant didn’t constitute any threat for the state of Israel.The permits the mother and her daughter received were only valid on Tuesday and they had a hospital appointment for Tuesday afternoon in the Al-Maqased hospital in Jerusalem

Terrorists Kill 17 Year Old Girl

The Jewish Jihadists are killing children again. You'd think that 400 dead children in Gaza would satisfy their thrist for blood, I guess not:

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A 17-year-old girl was killed and another person was injured on Thursday by Israeli tank fire at the El Marej refugee camp east of Gaza City, hospital sources said.

Israel Defense Forces responded to the report by saying a tank fired across the border in retaliation to mortars fired at an Israeli border patrol.

This comes on the same day as Amnesty International issued a scathing report about Israeli and Palestinian actions during Israel's fierce winter offensive in Gaza, undertaken after months of rocket attacks by Palestinian militants into Israel.

The report said Israeli troops killed hundreds of unarmed civilian adults and children, broke laws and committed war crimes. source

Terrorists Raid Al Aqsa Mosque

Militant Jewish Jihadists disguised as tourists, descended onto the Al Aqsa Mosque, invading holy areas and photographing them for unknown purposes. Members of the Mosque attempted to document this invasion but the terrorists physically obtained the camera and removed the memory card so as to have no record of the terrorists in action.

A group of Israeli intelligence forces disguised as tourists entered the Haram Ash-Sharif or sacred compound holding the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque Friday morning and walked into the mosque taking photos of several sites in the compound, the Al-Aqsa organization for Waqf and Heritage revealed.

The organization documented the invasion of the holy site on a video camera. When the disguised intelligence unit realized they were being filmed, the organization said, their police detained Waqf journalist Mahmoud Abu Ata for four hours.

Well, it seems that Jewish women in Israel now have something in common with Palestinians. Both are not considered equal in Israel. The Rabid Racist Rabbi Ronski says so. My readers my remember a few months ago I made a post about this "Man of Satan." He's the racist asshat that gave the "religious" pamphlets to the IDF soldiers telling them to kill civilians for Israel. Now he targets Jewish women. Although I have mixed emotions on this as I am pro-women's rights, but at the same time I'm happy to have less murdering scum in the Israeli army. Anyway, the point being, Israel is a state where equality does not exist, even for Jewish women as was so blatantly evident when Israeli newspapers photo-shopped newly elected women out of the Israeli Cabinet photos.Now here's the latest bout of Misogyny:

Israel's military rabbi says army not for women: report

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israel's chief military rabbi, Avichai Ronski, has said women should not serve in the armed forces, the Haaretz newspaper reported on Thursday.

"I personally think that ... women should not serve in the army," he said at a recent conference attended by dozens of religious women soldiers, according to Haaretz. link

Add their findings to the UN's findings on Israel targeting UN facilities, and add that to the findings of Richard Goldstone and what do we have? The Evil Rogue State is guilty of murder and collective punishment on an entire population AND they used US supplied weapons illegally. Hence, we can now clearly use the phrase "War Criminal" when we address any Israeli Official or Zionist. They have become the 21st century Nazis, and have now joined the ranks of Eichmann and other Nazis.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL holds that Israel’s offensive on Gaza, launched without warning on December 27th last year, breached the laws of war. When ceasefires were imposed on January 18th, Amnesty says in a 117-page report published today, the “first comprehensive report” on the conflict, 1,400 Palestinians, most of them civilians, had been killed, including 300 children.

Palestinians also violated international law by firing rockets indiscriminately into southern Israel killing three civilians and forcing many to flee the area.

The report, released in Jerusalem, argues that “Much of the destruction [in Gaza] was wanton and resulted from direct attacks on civilian objects, as well as indiscriminate attacks that failed to distinguish between legitimate military targets and civilian objects” in violation of international law.

“Hundreds of civilians were killed in attacks carried out using high-precision weapons. Others, including women and children, were shot at short range when posing no threat to the lives of Israeli soldiers.”

Amnesty questions the misuse of high-precision weapons to kill children playing on rooftops or people sleeping their homes. Israel not only fired imprecise incendiary white phosphorus shells over and into densely populated residential areas, killing and wounding civilians and destroying property, but also, asserts Amnesty, denied that this substance was being used, delaying appropriate medical treatment for the injured. “Artillery in general and white phosphorus shells in particular should never be used in populated areas” and their use is unlawful, the report says. Amnesty says Israeli troops used Palestinians as “human shields” to provide protection while they occupied or searched buildings.

“The scale and intensity of the attacks were unprecedented, even in the context of increasingly lethal Israeli military campaigns in Gaza in previous years,” the report says. More people were killed and more damage was inflicted than in any earlier Israeli offensive.

Amnesty criticises Israel for failing to “establish any independent or impartial investigation into the conduct of their forces” and for refusing to co-operate with independent fact-finding missions. The organisation contrasts the Israeli attitude with that of Hamas, which rules Gaza and freely permits human rights organisations to conduct investigations into Israeli and Palestinian abuses.Irish Times

Sinn Fein's President,Gerry Adams, has finished his report on the Gaza situation and Middle East peace process. This report will be forwarded to the US government, through George Mitchell and Tony Blair. I had this emailed to me two days ago, but only checked email today, sorry for the small delay in posting it. I will publish important excerpts of the 36 page report made by Adams in this post. For those interested in reading the entire document a PDF link will be at the end of this post. Please note, this is a very long but important post which addresses the political aspects of conflict resolution along with an assessment of the situation.

Another start must be made in the Middle East. That includes a huge international effort to begin the work of reconstruction in the Gaza strip and the West Bank.

The international community also has a duty to create the political conditions in which a real dialogue can happen.

So far it has behaved in a shameful way by failing to effectively and persistently pursue the building of a peace process capable of delivering a political settlement.

That must change.

The Sinn Féin peace strategy helped create the conditions for the Irish peace process which has transformed political conditions in Ireland. While no two conflicts are the same there are nonetheless broad principles which can be helpful in all conflict resolution processes.

Sinn Féin, within our limited resources, is willing to offer our experience to others if it can help.

June 2009 Israel, Gaza and the West Bank - A Report:

_ Approximately 3,500 homes destroyed, 28,000 homes damaged.3

_ 800 industries damaged/destroyed during Operation Cast Lead: 120 million USD of directphysical damage incurred during the 22 day military operation.4

_ Agricultural sector: Direct losses to crops, fisheries, livestock and poultry estimated at $180 million.

_ Impact on the infrastructure of a future Palestinian state: Palestinian Legislative Council destroyed; 7 government institutions completely or partially destroyed.

_ 10 schools destroyed, 204 damaged.5

_ 600,000 tonnes of rubble need to be removed.

_ 14 mosques destroyed, 38 mosques, 2 churches and the British Commonwealth cemetery in Gaza damaged.

_ 41 public health clinics and 29 ambulances were either damaged or destroyed.6

_ Prior to the IDF operation, per capita water consumption was 80 litres/person/day, below acceptable international standards (minimum guidelines 150 l/person/day). During
Operation Cast Lead, 11 water wells were either partially damaged or totally destroyed, 4 water reservoirs were damaged, 20,000 meters of pipes, 4 sewage network and pumping stations and one of Gaza's two main sewage treatment plants was damaged.

_ 57 km of asphalted roads destroyed, resulting in $78 million of physical damage.

SETTLEMENTS

In its report: Israel and Palestine an Irish Congress of Trade Unions delegation visited the Middle East in November 2007.In its Overall Conclusions it describes the impact of the settlements and of the Separation Wall.

The Settlements
The settlements - which violate international law - and the Israeli checkpoints are all pervasive.

Everywhere we went in the West Bank we observed settlements, some of them massive, most often located on hilltops, overlooking and monitoring the Palestinians below.

The settler accommodation invariably comprised bright, modern houses and apartments and is in stark contrast to the impoverished shanty town appearance of the Palestinian homes below.

The settlers themselves are heavily armed and are protected throughout the West Bank by a strong Israeli military presence. Indeed, mobility within the West Bank between Palestinian villages, towns and cities is severely curtailed and under the control of Israeli forces: for example, entering and leaving Hebron or Nablus.

The Israeli army, as well as armed Israeli civilians, operate barriers and controlled crossings, many of which resemble the heavily fortified border checkpoints which were evident during the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Also very noticeable is the fragmented and divided nature of the West Bank itself, which is due to the proliferation of 'settler-only' roads controlled entirely by the IDF. Many are newly constructed, of high quality and frequently run in parallel to existing roads used by Palestinians. These roads provide direct access for settlers to urban areas which Palestinians are prohibited from entering (e.g. Jerusalem), or which Palestinians can only enter after long detours - often taking several hours - and after processing at Israeli checkpoints.

There is little doubt that this two-tier infrastructure both hampers and impedes any form of sustainable Palestinian development and prevents the emergence of a viable, contiguous, independent Palestinian state.

The Separation Wall

The delegation saw multiple examples of the devastating impact the construction of this massive 9 metre high concrete wall is having (Irish company Cement Roadstone Holdings (CRH) owns a 25 percent share in Mashav, Israel's only cement company, which supplies construction materials for the wall). (Irish people see my note at end of post)

It dominates huge swathes of the Palestinian landscape, destroying agricultural land, cutting farmers off from their livelihoods and causing the destruction of tens of thousands of olive trees.

It was genuinely shocking to see the impact of the wall in urban areas, where it sunders entire communities and neighbourhoods, and imposes severe restrictions on access to essential services and employment. The delegation heard, but was neither impressed nor convinced by the argument that the wall is essential to the security of Israel.

It was noted that the wall does not follow the route of the 1967 Green Line border. It has instead snaked into Palestinian territory and seized up to 12 percent of Palestinian land, including significant water resources.

The delegation believes, therefore, that the construction of the wall amounts to a land (and water) grab, while simultaneously creating a new border in advance of any possible final settlement.

In July 2004 the International Court of Justice, in The Hague, declared the construction of the wall to be illegal, ordered that it be dismantled, and ruled that Israel should pay reparation to the Palestinians affected by its construction. The ruling also found that the wall, in conjunction with other Israeli measures, "severely impeded the exercise by the Palestinian people of its right to self determination."

The Gaza Strip:

From the moment you enter the Gaza strip under the gaze of the watchtowers and through the huge gates in the security wall and security system controlled by Israel at the Erez Crossing, the overwhelming sense is one of entering a huge open air prison. A million and a half people live there enduring multiple deprivations and denial of rights.

The television images of the assault on Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and the cold statistics set out in multiple reports from reputable international relief and human rights agencies all support claims that society in general on the Gaza strip was the target of this assault.

Residential areas, educational and medical facilities alongside political and civil administration establishments were targeted. This included the police. Water and electricity services and roads were also targeted. Military institutions were attacked.





The human cost of the assault on Gaza is an affront to humanity.The reason given for the assault is that it was a reaction to the firing of Qassam rockets.

"No-one in Gaza believes this."

Moreover, by any standards, it was a wholly disproportionate response.

A UN panel, led by Ian Martin a former head of Amnesty International concluded that Israeli actions in using white phosphorous munitions showed a 'reckless disregard' for human life.

Those Palestinians I spoke to believe that the assault on Gaza was an attempt to topple Hamas and to demonstrate to the people of Gaza the price for voting for that party.

There will be no Palestinian/Israeli agreement without an agreement on Jerusalem. This is a universal view amongst the Palestinian opinions shared with me.

West Bank Palestinians are subjected to stop and search on a daily basis and often several times a day at some 600 permanent roadblocks and crossing gates set up by the Israeli Defence Forces in the West Bank.

Alongside this seven hundred kilometres of roads have been constructed for the exclusive use of the Israeli Defence Forces and Israeli settlers in the ever burgeoning programme of colonizing Palestinian lands through the establishment of new Israeli settlements.

All of this, like the grotesque Separation Wall which stretches for 662.8 kilometres and snakes its way across Palestinian land is done in the name of security. All are illegal.

“Wall and planned settlement expansion will place 45.5% of the occupied west Bank under Israeli control … the revised Wall route alone de facto annexes 9% of the west Bank … effectively incorporates over 370,000 illegal settlers or nearly 87% of the Israeli settler population…Israel claims the Wall is about security, but the revised route, which stretches 662.8 km, still runs more than twice the length of the 1967 border …”

Others voice the opinion that generations coming up, unless there is a peace settlement, will make Al Qaeda, in retrospect, look like moderates."

The democratically elected representatives of Palestinian political opinion, Fatah and Hamas, representing between them approximately 80% of votes cast in the last election to the Palestinian Legislative Council, made clear to me in separate meetings that they support a two-state solution to the conflict. And that this requires, understandably, that any Palestinian state be viable and sustainable. This would require ease of movement between the West Bank and the Gaza strip.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh in our meeting on Wednesday 9 April made a number of points in respect of this and related matters.
He said Hamas:

_ Is involved in discussions with Fatah in respect of unity and an agreed political platform to provide a common position for democratically elected Palestinian representatives; to present a single representative Palestinian voice.

_ Is ready to make compromises to achieve Palestinian unity on these issues.

_ Has no interest in establishing or sustaining Gaza as a separate political entity. (Some senior Palestinians told me that they believe this is an Israeli Government objective. Their view is that the Israeli government will agree to Gaza as a Palestinian state, colonise as much of the west Bank as possible and hive off the rest to Jordan.)

_ Wants justice, stability, security and peace for Palestinians and Israelis.

Supports, as the route to this:

_ A comprehensive ceasefire;

_ The opening of borders;

_ The lifting of the siege of Gaza;

_ The two-state compromise and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital on the basis of the 1967 borders;

_ And the establishment of a long Hudna (long truce) to facilitate this as an important enabling element. That is a renewable 'life long' truce between the Palestinian and Israeli authorities.

A number of Palestinians made clear their preference for a single secular state of Palestine on the basis of the historic/old Mandate borders embracing Israelis and Palestinians, Jews, Moslems, Christians and so on.

If Israelis were not prepared to accept that at this time, they said, then they would support a two-state solution for now and let a future generation politically address the single state option.

International Context

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has ever been bound up with wider regional and international influences and interests. This includes the states with shared borders - Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria - the wider Arab and indeed Islamic world, East/West interests which have endured beyond the Cold War and in particular the role and influence of the United States.

At best conflicting interests have neutralised the international community as a positive influence for justice, stability, security and peace for Palestinians and Israelis.

At another level this results in United Nations Resolutions and international law being flouted with impunity and immunity.

This is not acceptable. It needs to end.

The current situation is untenable.

Conclusions

I regret that the view of the Israeli Government is not reflected in this report. That is an unfortunate consequence of its refusal to meet the Sinn Féin delegation.

Dialogue has to be a central tenet of any attempt to make peace; to achieve justice, stability, security and peace.

Refusing to engage in dialogue; demonising opponents; treating them as non citizens; stripping them of their rights and entitlements, of their self esteem and integrity as human beings; engaging in censorship and vilification, makes war easier and peace harder.

It is a policy which guarantees a perpetuation of the cycle of conflict.

The international experience is clear.

There are two ways to end conflict. Either one side convincingly beats the other or all of those involved engage in the more difficult and challenging process of peace making.

61 years after the emergence of the Israeli state and the partition of Palestine, and with the increasing sophistication of the weapons of war on all sides, it is clear that no wall - however high-can provide permanent peace or security.

A political settlement is required and this is only possible if there is a recognition and acceptance of democratic mandates of all of the participants.

Peace making is conducted by and between enemies not between friends.

That means that a necessary element of a conflict resolution process in the Middle East which hopes to achieve a successful outcome, must be an acceptance of inclusive dialogue based on equality and respect.

This required a serious, good faith effort to engage between political opponents. And this will require determination and commitment to stick with it through all of the inevitable arguments and differences and crises that will emerge.

For Palestinians this means uniting in the national interest by agreeing a truly national political platform involving all of the Palestinian parties.
Fail to do this and the age old tactic of divide and rule will weaken the Palestinian ability to achieve their rights through negotiation.

Party political interests need to be subsumed in the national and democratic cause.

For the Israelis the challenge is equally daunting. Israel is a major regional and world power. It has the ability to continue to pursue and implement policies which foster division and conflict, or it can take dramatic decisions for peace.

The recent positions set out by President Obama, and the appointment of Senator George Mitchell, are welcome developments. The United States of America has a particular role to play and is certainly the most influential international player on the Israeli authorities.

Sinn Féin Position
Sinn Féin supports the right of all peoples to national self determination and to the exercise of that right without external interference or impediment.

Explicitly, that means there must be an end to the Israeli occupation. Before and during my recent visit I consistently set out - privately and publicly - aspects of Sinn Féin's view of the situation.

In brief this included the following opinions:

_ The situation had deteriorated since my first visit in September 2006.

_ Israelis and Palestinians are destined to share the same piece of ground and to live side by side.

_ Everyone deserves and requires justice, stability, security and peace.

_ A two-state solution holds out the best prospect to secure these objectives.

_ Dialogue is central to this.

_ There should be a complete cessation of all hostilities and freedom of
movement for everyone.

I made clear that I was willing and ready to meet for discussions with all democratically elected representatives who wished to meet with me. I also said I would report on my visit to Sen. George Mitchell who has recently been appointed U.S. Envoy to the region.

Pro-Israel Lobby Alarmed by Growth of Boycott, Divestment Movement

The movement to call Israel to account for its crimes against the Palestinian people is growing, it is "invading the mainstream discourse, becoming part of the constant and unrelenting drumbeat against Israel." It could eventually threaten the existence of the Jewish state by undermining the support it receives from its strongest backer, the U. S. government.

That was the message of alarm delivered by the Executive Director of the American Israel American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Howard Kohr, to the AIPAC Policy Conference on May 3.[i]

Here are just a few tiny examples:

Veolia: a major victory for the corporate boycott campaign

European solidarity activists have waged a particularly effective campaign against the French multinationals Veolia and Alstom. These companies are part of a consortium that is building a light railway connecting occupied Jerusalem to Israeli settlements in the West Bank, reinforcing Israel's hold on Palestinian land.

In the U.K., the Palestine Solidarity Campaign conducted an active petition campaign against Veolia's attempt to win a 25-year waste collection and recycling contract worth £1 billion ($1.6 billion) with the Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. On March 16 the council announced that Veolia had failed to qualify for the shortlist of three companies that would be invited to bid on the contract.

Also in March, the Swedish national pension fund AP7 announced that it was removing Alstom from its investment portfolio. Activists in Sweden had organized a public education campaign for divestment. The pension fund specifically cited the Jerusalem rail project as the reason it had blacklisted the company.[xiii]

The following month the Urban Community of Bordeaux cancelled its contract, worth 750 million euros ($1.0 billion), with Veolia. Although the French municipality cited commercial factors, the cancellation came in the wake of a major controversy over Veolia's involvement in the Jerusalem project. The Galway City Council in Ireland and the Stockholm Community Council in Sweden both recently decided not to renew their contracts with Veolia.[xiv]

Proud to be Irish

Finally, the pressure became too much for Veolia. On June 9 the Israeli daily Haaretz reported that the company was abandoning the Jerusalem project. The paper described the company's decision as a "body blow" to the project, noting that "the French firm had been losing major projects in Europe because of its involvement in the Jerusalem job. Observers claim that's the real reason Veolia opted out."[xv]

This marks the first major victory of the corporate boycott campaign. Veolia was forced to divest from the Jerusalem project as a result of a targeted and sustained campaign in various countries, coordinated internationally with the help of the Palestinian BDS National Committee. The victory demonstrates how such campaigns can produce tangible victories. It is likely to spur supporters of Palestine to increase their efforts to force corporations to sever their ties with Israel.

COSATU and the Palestine Solidarity Committee reaffirmed their commitment to campaigning for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel. They called on the South African government to sever diplomatic and trade relations with Israel and announced a week of activities under the theme: "Free Palestine! Isolate Apartheid Israel!"[xvi]

COSATU was the first major national labour federation to call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Several other national labour federations have followed suit, including those of New Zealand and Ireland. MUCH MORE HERE

Trade unionists are to launch a boycott of Israeli goods as part of a major campaign to secure a peaceful settlement in the Middle East, Stormont heard today.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) launched a report on Israel and Palestine compiled by senior members who visited the troubled region.

ICTU President Patricia McKeown led the Middle East visit that involved 11 senior members of the umbrella group representing trade unions across Ireland, including 36 trade unions with 250,948 members in Northern Ireland

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams who hosted the report's launch in Stormont's Long Gallery commended the trade unionists.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams told today's event: "Since the visit by the ICTU delegation, Gaza has been the target of an all-out military assault by Israeli forces. Over 1,300 people were killed, many of them children.

"Unless the international community and that includes the Irish government, the British government, the EU and the US government exercises its considerable influence and authority, any relaxation of the current assault on Gaza will only bring a short respite for citizens there."

He said a sustained international effort was needed to secure a durable settlement and added: "If the conflict here taught us anything, that is that no conflict is intractable. There are solutions." source

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip—In blockaded Gaza, even an American passport isn't a sure ticket to freedom.
Two boys, ages 5 and 6, are stranded because one has a U.S. passport that expired and the other's is about to.

The U.S. offers no consular services in Gaza, and Israel's border closure of the Hamas-ruled territory prevents the children from reaching the nearest U.S. diplomatic mission in Israel.

The bureaucratic limbo means the boys' Palestinian parents can't leave Gaza, either. Their father, Kamal Elkafarna, stands the risk of losing out on doctoral studies in Russia.

"It's an absurd situation," said Keren Tamir of the Israeli human rights group Gisha, which has appealed to an Israeli court on behalf of the family. "They can't get new passports since they can't leave Gaza, and they can't leave Gaza since they don't have new passports."

The closure is enforced by both Israel and Egypt, which only let out a trickle of Gazans. Egypt opens the gates periodically for Palestinians with foreign residency or medical patients. Israel enables Gazans suffering serious illness to reach Israeli hospitals for treatment.

Israel says the travel restrictions are a result of Hamas' hostility to the Jewish state.

Israeli soldiers poured dirt, stones and toxic chemicals in the only well in the hamlet of Khirbat Makehl near the village of Ya’bad in the northern West Bank overnight on Saturday, according to Palestinians in the community.

The village’s official representative, Walid Hamdan, said soldiers riding in three military jeeps entered the community overnight and sabotaged the well. The chemicals caused the water to change color and taste, he said.

The 80 cubic-meter well is the only source of water for the village of 70 to 80 families, Hamdan said.

He also said that, since the village lies near the Israeli settlement of Hermesh, the armed guards of the settlement often harass and assault Palestinians, particularly herders who venture near the edges of the settlement. Israeli forces also sometimes close the road leading to the community, preventing deliveries of food. source

Zionist Occupying Force Responsible for MORE Deaths

One Palestinian was killed and three more were injured when a house collapsed in the Ash-Sha'ath neighborhood of eastern Gaza on Monday.

The home had been damaged by Israeli shelling in the area during the country's offensive in the Gaza Strip in late December and January.

Three Palestinians were taken to Ash-Shifa Hospital with moderate injuries, according to Dr Mu'awiyah Hassanein, the head of Emergency and Ambulance Services within the Gaza Health Ministry.

The official added that there were reports of three more people missing in the house, which witnesses said collapsed while workers were doing repairs. source

In Jericho the forces allegedly arrested Ibrahim Kassab and Iyad Hamdy Wahbeh.

Calif. professor's Gaza e-mail cleared by panel

On Wednesday, he was notified that a faculty committee had found no "probable cause" to undertake a full investigation of complaints filed against him related to e-mail messages he sent to his students in which he compared Israelis and Nazis. Further, he was notified that the administration at the University of California at Santa Barbara had accepted the faculty members' analysis, and that the case was over -- without his ever having faced formal charges before a disciplinary committee.

Supporters of Robinson, a tenured professor of sociology, agreed with those findings. But they said that grievances filed over e-mail messages sent in January should have been seen immediately as baseless, and that allowing the case to linger for months endangered the academic freedom of Robinson and others.

The case has attracted attention far beyond Santa Barbara, with the American Association of University Professors last month calling on the university to "pause" its inquiries because of the academic freedom issues involved. Cary Nelson, national president of the AAUP, said Wednesday night that "although I am pleased that the Robinson case has been closed, I am also concerned that unnecessary investigations of faculty exercising their academic freedom are having a serious chilling effect on our more vulnerable or less courageous colleagues."

The dispute dates to an e-mail message that Robinson sent to the approximately 80 students in January in a course about sociology and globalization. The e-mail contained an article criticizing the Israeli military's actions in Gaza. Part of the e-mail was an assemblage of photos from Nazi Germany's persecution of Jews and from Israel's actions in Gaza. Students were invited to look at the "parallel images." A message from Robinson argued that Gaza would be like "Israel's Warsaw."

In February, the Anti-Defamation League's Santa Barbara office wrote to Robinson to protest the e-mail and to urge him to repudiate it. "While your writings are protected by the First Amendment and academic freedom, we rely upon our rights to say that your comparisons of Nazis and Israelis were offensive, ahistorical and have crossed the line well beyond legitimate criticism of Israel," the letter said. It went on to say that the "tone and extreme views" in his e-mail were "intimidating to students," and that using his university e-mail to send "material that appears unrelated to" his course violated university standards for faculty members.

Following that letter, two students in the course dropped the class and filed complaints against Robinson. One student wrote that she felt "nauseous" upon reading the e-mail, and felt it was inappropriate. A second student complaint accusing Robinson of being unprofessional -- also from a student who dropped the course after receiving the e-mail -- said that Robinson has "clearly stated his anti-Semitic political views in this e-mail."

Robinson could not be reached Wednesday, but last month he told Inside Higher Ed that the charges against him were "absolutely absurd." He noted that he is Jewish and said that he abhors anti-Semitism, and that his academic freedom is being violated by the university taking seriously charges that link his e-mail criticisms of Israel's government with anti-Semitism. "This is all because I have criticized the policies of the State of Israel."

Data from Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics supports that argument, showing that in 2007, 36 percent of all new settlers had moved from Israel or abroad.

Amid the influx of people drawn to cheaper housing in settlements, construction has continued _ more than 5,500 new apartments have been completed over the past three years in the West Bank, bureau figures show.

Settlements are a major obstacle to peacemaking because Israel has used them to extend its de facto boundaries into the West Bank and to cement its claim on east Jerusalem. The Palestinians claim both territories, captured by Israel in 1967, for a future state, along with the Gaza Strip, and want the Jewish construction there to stop.

Under the 2003 U.S.-backed road map peace plan, Israel promised to halt all settlement construction, including for natural growth. But the building has gone on.

Jerusalem-born Yaffa Shkibai, who has lived in Maaleh Adumim for 26 of her 50 years, has bought apartments for each of her four children here.«They should continue building and not be afraid of the U.S.,» she said. «If we bend, they'll kick us out of here.

The United States is among those monitoring settlement activity. The U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem said its officials regularly visit settlements and take photographs. A foreman at one construction project in Maaleh Adumim said Monday that U.S. officials had been there recently, walking around and taking pictures.

Australian Prime Minister travels to Israel for a Zionist "Love Fest" and brags that Australian delegate was the "first" to vote of the State of Israel.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has arrived in Israel for talks with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Ms Gillard is leading a delegation of politicians, musicians and filmmakers as part of a program to forge stronger ties between Australia and the Jewish state.

Despite criticism of her visit, Ms Gillard has made no apologies for Australia's support of Israel.

"When a vote was called in 1947 to establish separate Jewish and Arab states, the Australian delegate was the first to vote in favour of Israel's right to full independent nationhood and its right to live securely within defined borders," she said.

According to the website of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronot, the demonstrators blocked roads leading to the Karni, Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings.

The demonstrators are apparently objecting to their government’s policy of allowing a trickle of humanitarian aid into Gaza, where Palestinian militiamen have been holding Shalit prisoner since 2006. source

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Peter Eyre, a British researcher in the usage of uranium during wars, revealed that the laboratory tests conducted in Wales on samples taken from the post-war Gaza Strip showed that Israel had used dirty bombs which have devastating results in the long run.

Eyre confirmed, in a report published in Palestine Telegraph newspaper, that Israel used white phosphorus and weapons that contain depleted uranium in violation of the Geneva Convention.

The British researcher pointed out that the use of these internationally-prohibited weapons led to the spread of cancers and other relevant diseases among citizens.

The newspaper said that Eyre is expected to arrive in Gaza aboard the Free Gaza boat in the coming days carrying with him documents proving that Israel stole natural gas from Gaza shores.

Bikini-clad activists from the women's group CODEPINK covered themselves in mud and stood outside the Israeli Ministry of Tourism's Tel Aviv Beach party in Central Park on Sunday.

The protest grabbed attention as they chanted, "Tel Aviv - you can't hide, we can see your dirty side!" CODEPINK states the mud they covered themselves in was to represent the "dirty policies Irsrael holds towards Palestine."

Holding pink umbrellas outside the artificial Tel Aviv Beach, the women held signs that read, "Say no to Israel's war crimes."

The Tel Aviv Beach Party was sponsored by the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Consulate General of Israel in New York, Israel Ministry of Tourism, Israel Government Tourist Office in New York, and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Centennial Administration. linkCODE
