Taglit sends Jews aged 18 to 26 who have never been to Israel, on a free, 10-day trip to the Jewish state. Its goal, when it launched in 1999, was to foster the connection between young Jews, Israel and the Jewish community.

Professor Leonard Saxe of Brandeis University this week revealed the findings of a five-month study of Taglit alumni who went to Israel between 2001 and 2004. Taglit participants were 57 per cent more likely to be married to another Jew and 30 per cent more likely to view raising children as Jews as “very important”, compared with non-participants.

One in six Taglit alumni said the trip had made them more likely to marry a Jew and/or raise their children as Jews.

“This programme works and we now have research to substantiate it,” said CEO Gidi Mark. “The only problem now is to find the money.”

Lewis said they were detained because their names sounded Jewish and Israeli to the soldiers; people with Israeli passports are forbidden from entering Gaza. They said Shin Bet security agents questioned Lewis while Klein stood by.

Klein, author of "No Logo" (published in Israel by Babel), is visiting here to promote her book "The Shock Doctrine," which Andalus is publishing in Hebrew. She arrived last Thursday night and took part in a demonstration against the separation fence near the West Bank village of Bil'in. She also had meetings at the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem, and spent two days in Gaza. In fact he forces his way into a Muslim holy site, surrounded by an armed racist militia, in order to show the lowly Muslims who is in charge of their very lives.

Reminds me of the old days when bigots marched through Catholic neighbourhoods singing sectarian songs, and spitting on people, just to remind the Irish who had the power over them. Or when the Nazi's marched through Jewish neighbourhoods. You'd think they would have learned a lesson on how to treat people from once being the victim of Nazis. Israel’s Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City under heavy guard on Tuesday morning in what Palestinian officials condemned as a provocation.

Aharonovitch, a member of the ultra-right-wing Israel Beitenu Party, toured the compound accompanied by Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen and Jerusalem District Police Chief Aharon Franco.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam and also a major symbol of Palestinian nationalism. A visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2000 sparked the second Palestinian uprising, the Al-Aqsa Intifada.

Israeli officials entered the compound at 8:20am surrounded by security guards. They walked to the eastern wall of the mosque, and then stopped to listen to a report about the situation at the holy site.

Aharonovitch and his delegation then moved to the Dome of the Rock, where the Islamic Waqf is currently performing maintenance work. Recently some of the maintenance work was ordered to stop by the Israeli police.

The Al-Aqsa Foundation for Heritage said in a statement that the Israeli minister also barged into the Marwani mosque and into the Dome of the Rock, and circled the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The organization said, “This visit shows that the Israeli institution are targeting Al-Aqsa,” and it asked, “is this incursion a provocation only or is there something else behind the visit?”

Shiekh Azzam Khatib, the director of Jerusalem Waqf (Endowment) said the visit was carried out without a coordination with the Waqf, which has jurisdiction over the compound. He said he did not know the reason for the visit.link

Then, what if the Police Officers just opened fire on the entire group of American civilians protesting, killing several of them. It happened once in American history, at Kent State during the Viet Nam war. But never again!

RAMALLAH, West Bank, June 5 (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man on Friday in a confrontation with stone-throwing protesters in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian hospital officials said.

Medics said Aqel Srour, 35, was hit in the chest by a live bullet and another protester was wounded when soldiers fired at protesters in Nilin, a village near the city of Ramallah.

Srour died minutes later, Mohammed Shahwan, a doctor on the ambulance called to the scene, told Reuters.

An Israeli military spokesman said troops had opened fire when protesters threw stones at them in the village, but would not confirm whether the troops had used live ammunition. link

Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer, who has filed a formal demand for an official investigation, said that of some 120 criminal investigations brought against security force members since the beginning of the intifada, there had only been one conviction – against the Arab-Israeli soldier who shot British peace activist Tom Hurndall dead in Gaza.

Nobody was brought to trial in two other cases involving the deaths of foreign nationals. They were Rachel Corrie, who like Mr Hurndall was an International Solidarity Movement volunteer. The Israeli military has not accepted responsibility for her death. In the case of British film-maker James Miller, Israeli authorities made a substantial cash payment to his family this year, which came nearly six years after his death.

The Israeli military said that on the day Mr Anderson was shot, some 400 rioters, “some masked”, had thrown “a massive number of rocks” at their forces.

So, "rocks" and "masks" are considered deadly to soldiers of the 4th largest army in the world, with rifles and tanks. Makes prefect sense, only in Israel, where they murder for sport and never are held accountable for their crimes, even against Americans, Britians or any other country. They are immune, because they are poor little Israel.

Israel's tourist ministry has admitted to a "mistake" over adverts on the London Underground after complaints that they "wipe Palestine off the map".

The ads include a map which campaigners say shows the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip - as well as Syria's Golan Heights - as integral parts of Israel. (Zionist Asshats!!)

The ministry said that in general, maps should not be used on billboards. (Well maybe they should take their own advice, ya think?)

But it denied a Transport for London statement that it had asked for the offending posters to be removed.

Transport for London said it has received about 600 complaints about the poster, while the Advertising Standards Authority said it had had 300.

Hugh Lanning of the London-based Palestine Solidarity Campaign said the adverts were a "disingenuous attempt to remove the Palestinians from the public mind, and create a false impression about what constitutes Israel".

The posters were "selling a lie" by suggesting tourists could visit Gaza when the Hamas-run strip is subject to a strict Israeli blockade under which even some doctors and humanitarian workers have been denied entry, PSC said.

The map shows Israel, the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights in the same striking yellow colour; the faintest of white lines mark out the Palestinian territories - though not the Syrian one which Israel annexed in 1981.

Insufficient vetting

Israel occupied the three Arab territories, including East Jerusalem, during the 1967 war. It has since cemented its hold by settling hundreds of thousands of its citizens there.

Oren Drori, Head of Marketing Administration for the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, described the adverts as a "professional mistake" with no geopolitical intentions. (Yeah, the same kind of "professional mistake" they made killing all those children in Gaza)

He said he did not think maps should be used on billboards to advertise tourism in any country and the adverts had not been sufficiently vetted. (dumbshits!)

"We are not tearing anything down," he said. But the ministry had decided to "fast-forward" to the next set of posters scheduled in the campaign, after learning that there was "a bit of a harsh response" to the map advert, he said. (ROTFLMAO)

No more map adverts would be posted, he said, and existing ones would be removed as they reached the end of their scheduled display times over the next two weeks, he said.

The Syrian Embassy in London, which had lodged its own protest, described the advert as "offensive". (Yup Israel excels at being offensive)

MPs of Israel's ruling right-wing coalition on Thursday presented a bill aimed at blocking any concession to Palestinians on the status of Jerusalem, which Israel considers its "eternal" capital.

The projected legislation would require any change in the city's boundaries to have the backing of a majority of 80 of the 120 parliamentary deputies, as compared with 61 at present.

The MPs said the aim is to "guarantee the unity of the city."(In other words, illegally steal it for themselves)

The move came as Israel observed the 42nd anniversary of its occupation and annexation of Arab east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day-War.

Israel considers Jerusalem its "eternal and indivisible" capital despite international rejection of the claim and Palestinian ambitions to make east Jerusalem the capital of their future state.

The previous government had indicated the Jewish state might be willing to give up sovereignty on some Arab neighbourhoods of east Jerusalem.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, which was sworn in on March 31, has ruled this out.

The Jerusalem issue is among the main stumbling blocks in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, which have made no tangible progress since they were relaunched at a 2007 conference in Annapolis, Maryland. link

Israeli officials reacted with shock and fury after Brazilian authorities invited President Ahmadinejad for talks in Brasilia, summoning the country's ambassador to Israel, Pedro Motta Pinto Coelho, to give an explanation.

Much to Israel's dismay, Brazilian Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim, brushed aside the concern and asserted that the planned visit would go ahead as schedule.

"If we stop taking visitors because certain countries disagree with them, we would not be able to accept hardly anyone," Amorim was quoted as saying.source

Expansion will include 6,000 housing units to be built between the Ma’ale Adumim and Qedar settlements, it was announced on Sunday morning. more here

Israel Told to STOP Stealing

The United Nations has asked Israel to freeze the planned demolition of Arab homes in east Jerusalem

Israel annexed east Jerusalem after capturing it in the 1967 Mideast War and expropriated one-third of the annexed land to build housing for 195,000 Jews.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report published today that only 13 per cent of east Jerusalem is now zoned for Palestinian construction.

An estimated 1,500 residents of east Jerusalem's Silwan neighbourhood are facing eviction where 88 Arab homes are under Israeli demolition orders.

Palestinians say the planned demolitions are aimed at forcing them out of east Jerusalem. Israel considers Jerusalem to be its capital while Palestinians want to make east Jerusalem the capital of their future state.

If the demolition orders are carried out it would represent one of the largest forced evictions since Israel occupied mostly Arab east Jerusalem.

Twenty-eight per cent of Palestinian homes are built in violation of Israeli zoning restrictions and face possible demolition. The UN report says about 1,500 demolition orders are currently pending. source

Yet, what the world witnessed was the US giving "false" evidence (some of which was obtained off an internet site LOL) to invade Iraq. Now, today we all know there were NO weapons of mass destruction, and NO legal reason to invade Iraq. Moreover, the US now will leave the country in turmoil and destruction, with infighting between factions, great work America! Israeli Health Minister Yakov Litzman has been updating a nervous public on the swine flu epidemic - and he started by renaming it for religious reasons.

"We will call it Mexican flu. We won't call it swine flu," said Mr Litzman, who belongs to the ultra-religious United Torah Judaism party.

This on the same day the close down the West Bank and Gaza to force Palestinians to be reminded of Isra-HELL'S independence day, puke!

A special committee in the Israeli Housing Ministry approved a plan on Sunday to expand the illegal West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim by 12,000 dunums (12,000 square meters) in spite of objections from the United States.

The plan would link Ma’ale Adumim, the largest settlement in the West Bank, with the nearby settlement of Qedar, seizing the land in between. This expansion, in addition to another planned expansion to the north of the settlement will further isolate the north of the occupied West Bank from the south.

The proposed expansion would include 6,000 new housing units in between Ma’ale Adumim and Qedar, which is now home to 800 settlers. Some 30,000 people live in Ma’ale Adumim, according to the Israeli government.

In addition to the expansion, Qedar, which was previously linked to the Etzion block of settlements in the southern West Bank, would now be annexed to the Ma’ale Adumim Municipality.

Former Israeli Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert had pushed to include Qedar on the western side of the separation wall, thereby consolidating Israel’s claim to the territory.

Ma'ale Adumim was originally built in 1976 in violation of international law and in defiance of a US monitoring mission that sought to prevent the construction of settlements. link

Israel Shuts Down Gaza & West Bank

Israel will be shutting down Gaza and the West Bank in preparation of forcing Palestinians to observe the creation and Independence of "Satanville" commonly known as Isra-HELL. Why? cos Palestinians need to be reminded that they have no country or independence, that's why.

Bethlehem-The Israeli army will impose a comprehensive closure on the West Bank and Gaza from midnight on Monday to midnight on Wednesday for Israel’s Independence Day.

The closure means that Palestinians from these territories will be barred from entering East Jerusalem and Israel, except for in emergency cases which must be coordinated with Israeli authorities.

Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948. Israelis mark the anniversary according to the Hebrew calendar. link

The Israeli museum Yad Vashem has fired an employee who compared the trauma of Jewish Holocaust survivors to that of Palestinians who were expelled in 1948 from their land in what is now Israel.

Jerusalem resident Itamar Shapira, 29, was relieved of his position as a teacher after a group of Jewish students from the settlement of Efrat made a complaint to the museum.

Yad Vashem’s official position, according to the report, is that “the Holocaust cannot be compared to any other event and that every visitor can draw his own political conclusions.”

Shapira said Yad Vashem “is being hypocritical. I only tried to expose the visitors to the facts, not to political conclusions. Reporters without borders have issued a very long press statement on the Durban II conference on racism. Below are some very interesting excerpts that seem to be directed at Israel's attempts to close down any talk of it being racist, LOL Imagine that!!! Appeal for freedom of expression

Appeal to international bodies and NGOs participating in 2nd World Conference against Racism.
Reporters Without Borders and the Doha Centre for Media Freedom are concerned about the threat to free expression that arises when the media broach religious issues. They therefore urge on the Member States of the United Nations and the international and regional organisations and NGOs attending the 2nd World Conference Against Racism (Durban II) to respect the following principles.

Convinced that an in-depth dialogue between cultures and religions favours the development of a tolerant and multicultural society;

We confirm our support for these principles:

The right to freedom of religion, as enshrined in international law, above all protects the individual and to a certain extent the rights of religious and belief communities, but not the religions themselves. It guarantees respect for believers, not beliefs.

It is neither useful nor necessary to impose more binding and repressive limits on free expression that those envisaged by international law, namely the prohibition of incitement to national, racial or religious hatred and incitement to war. The adoption of additional restrictions would pose a threat to the - very fundamental - freedom of expression and to related freedoms including freedom of religion.

Freedom of expression should only be subject to the restrictions imposed by law, namely the laws on defamation and insult, and the restrictions that are necessary for protecting safety and public order and the fundamental rights and freedoms or others.

Introducing or re-introducing “defamation of religions” and “blasphemy” as crimes in national or international legal documents would represent an unacceptable restriction on the right to free expression.

The dissemination of misconceptions about religions or members of religious communities may shock and elicit disproportionate reactions. But the response to hurtful comments is not to adopt laws restricting free expression but rather measures to foster a climate of tolerance and inclusiveness in which religions can be practiced without risk of stigmatisation or discrimination.

Analysis and evaluation of a religion’s content, including criticism, satire and disparaging comments, are part of the practice of freedom of expression, thought and opinion. source

Israel demands recognition

Israel's prime minister has told a visiting US envoy that the Palestinians must recognise Israel as a "Jewish state" before it will discuss establishing an independent Palestinian state.

Benyamin Netanyahu made the remarks as he met George Mitchell, the US special envoy for the Middle East, in Tel Aviv on Thursday.

"Israel expects the Palestinians to first recognise Israel as a Jewish state before talking about two states for two peoples," a senior official in Netanyahu's office quoted the new prime minister as saying.

Earlier, after meeting Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, Mitchell had repeated Washington's support for a Palestinian state.

"I reiterated to the foreign minister that US policy favours, with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a two-state solution which will have a Palestinian state living in peace alongside the Jewish state of Israel," he said.

"We look forward also to efforts to achieving comprehensive peace throughout the region."

Right to return

Jacky Rowland, reporting from Jerusalem, said: "It hasn't taken Benyamin Netanyahu long to show his true colours.

"Before the government was sworn in we heard statements that sought to allay fears that this would be a very right-wing government ... but now we are starting to see him produce hoops for the Palestinians to jump through," she said.

"Basically, asking the Palestinians to recognise Israel as a Jewish state is asking them to waive the right of return for Palestinian refugees."

Palestinians demand the right for the 4.6 million descendants of those who fled in 1948 to return to their lands that are now inside Israel.

"The idea of any Palestinian leader giving up on that claim lightly is really quite unrealistic," Rowland said.

The Palestinian Authority has rejected similar demands in the past, saying it only recognises Israel within the country's borders before the 1967 Middle East war when the Israelis seized the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

One in five people still living in Israel are Arabs.

Abdullah Abdullah, head of the PLO foreign affairs committee, told Al Jazeera that the comments showed Netanyahu was not interested in negotiating.

"He only puts this condition to block, to sabotage, any attempt by the American envoy to move the peace process forward," he said.

Netanyahu has said that he wants any peace talks with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, to focus mainly on security and economic issues.

'Dead end'

Furthermore, Lieberman, an Israeli nationalist, has flatly rejected a restart of the Israeli-Palestinian talks launched by George Bush, the former US president, in Annapolis in 2007.

On Thursday, the Israeli foreign minister, said that "the peace process has reached a dead end" and that "the new government will have to formulate new ideas and approaches," according to a statement from his office.

Israel committed itself to the principle of a Palestinian state under the 2003 international "road map" for peace, which included a series of steps for Israelis and Palestinians to follow, eventually resulting in negotiations over core issues and the creation of a Palestinian state.

Under the Annapolis agreement, the two sides began discussing those final status issues last year.

Mitchell was expected to travel to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on Friday to meet Abbas, who has insisted that the new Israeli cabinet commit itself to a two-state solution before the two sides can resume any talks.

The negotiations were halted during Israel's 22-day assault on the Gaza Strip, which left more than 1,300 Palestinians, mainly women and children, dead

Israel to Judaize more of al-Quds

Israel is to demolish some 90 houses in mainly Arab east al-Quds in a move that will deprive more than 1,500 Palestinians of their homes.

Israel in February had ordered hundreds of Palestinians living in eastern al-Quds to evacuate their houses, claiming they had pursued "illegal construction".

The decision drew Palestinian ire. Scores of people in the West Bank later took part in a general strike, protesting Israel's decision to demolish the houses in the village of Silwan near al-Quds (Jerusalem) to empty space for a national park.

According to Hatem Abdul Qader, who handles the affairs for the Palestinian Authority in al-Quds, the 'discriminatory plan' has gathered considerable momentum since the appointment of new al-Quds (Jerusalem) mayor, Nir Barkat.

Palestinian officials say that if the demolitions go ahead, it would mark the largest destruction of Palestinian property in eastern al-Quds since 1967.

This is while the Czech presidency of the European Union in a statement reminded Tel Aviv of its obligations under international law.

"Demolition of houses in this sensitive area threatens the viability of a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement, in conformity with international law," reads the statement issued on behalf of the bloc's 27 member states.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has also expressed concern over the plans to demolish scores of Palestinian houses in mainly Arab east al-Quds.

"We view with real concern the proposed demolitions in east Jerusalem. Jerusalem should be the capital of both the Palestinians and Israel," Miliband said in Jordan on Thursday.

Israel captured the mostly Arab east al-Quds in 1967 and later annexed the part in a move not recognized by the international community.

Tel Aviv continues to erect new homes in the occupied Palestinian territory despite strong opposition from the international community.

Some Muslim states and also Palestinians insist that there will be no peace in the Middle East until Israel quits eastern al-Quds and allows it to become the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

Durban II=The Cheese Shop

What do Monty Python's Cheese Shop Sketch and Durban II have in common?

The plight of the Palestinians has been removed from Durban II, just like the references to slaves and reparations for slavery, Sheesh! Not much of a conference on Racism, now is it? All the "racism" has been removed. Why don't they just hold a conference called the "Mutual Admiration Society" instead. Who cares if African Americans were slaves and suffered, who cares if Palestinians are being discriminated against and abused, who cares if Israel is an apartheid rogue state. All of these are removed from the so called "racism" conference. Ok, I just have to say it, can't help myself. I am reminded of one of my favorite "Monty Python" episodes, called "The Cheese Shop" (video below) where every type of cheese asked for, they don't have, in fact, they dont have ANY cheese at all!! The guy ends up saying "Not much of a cheese shop then is it?" Trust me, it's a lot funnier when you watch it, But this Durban II conference IS identical to Monty Python's Cheese Shop, no discussion of racism at the racism conference and no cheese in the cheese shop. Bethlehem - A UN-sponsored racism conference will begin Monday, but the plight of the Palestinians will not be on the agenda, partly because Palestine's own diplomats have buckled to US pressure, civil society organizations have alleged.

The Draft Outcome Document of the Durban Review Conference – to be held in Geneva, Switzerland – contains no reference to the Palestinians, Palestine, or to Israel or its occupation of Palestinian land. All such references were removed by a Preparatory Committee from an earlier draft in March.

According to its official website, the purpose of the conference is to “evaluate progress towards the goals set by the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Durban, South Africa, in 2001.”

The 2001 conference ended in controversy when the US and Israel walked out in protest of attempts to identify Israel as a perpetrator of racist policies.

In an open letter signed by some 50 Palestinian, Arab and international human rights organizations, it was alleged that “This step (of deleting any reference to Palestine) was unfortunately approved by official Arab negotiating delegations in Geneva including the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine at the UN office in Geneva.”

The letter accuses the Palestinian and Arab diplomats of capitulating to a threat to boycott the conference by US, Israel, Canada and European states to remove references to Israel and Palestinians.

Asked why the Palestinian negotiators had accepted the removal of their own people from the agenda, the head of the PLO mission to the UN in Geneva, Ibrahim Khreisha told Ma’an that “the decision was made by all groups” to remove references to all specific countries. “Some from Africa don’t want to mention certain African countries … like Sudan. Europe doesn’t want to mention Israel. … We don’t want to single out any one country.”

Asked why the US, Canada and Italy are still boycotting the conference despite the removal of the references to Israel and the Palestinians, Khreisha said that these countries were actually seeking further concessions, in fact asking for the Durban Review conference not to align itself with the goals set out in Durban.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the US State Department said it “welcomes the recent progress in … the document, removing all language that singled out any one country or conflict, and removing language that embraced the concept of ‘defamation of religion’ and that demanded reparations for slavery.”

Presented with this description of the US demand, Jaradat, the director of BADIL said that not endorsing the 2001 document would be the equivalent of “not having the conference.”

Khreisha said he did not know exactly what conditions would have to be met to persuade the US to participate in the conference, but he said that the American delegation was “waiting for instructions from Washington” and specifically from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

With Palestinians stricken from the agenda BADIL and its partners are organizing a parallel “Israel Review Conference” for civil society groups to discuss analysis and strategy in the fight against “Apartheid, Colonialism and Occupation.” link
