TRUTH ABOUT EGYPT, VIVA PALESTINA & GAZA FREEDOM MARCH

Before you get the shock of your life, first, check out these photos of the March to Rafah, the hunger strike, and the convoy to Gaza:

Well have I got a shocking story for you today. Those photos you just viewed above are NOT from the Viva Palestina Convoy OR the Code Pink Gaza Freedom March. The answer to be revealed shortly:

1. We all remember after the recent Gaza genocide January 2009 that George Galloway took the first convoy into Gaza in March 2009. We all watched, cried and cheered for them. It was NOT the first convoy to break the siege.

2. Remember the recent Code Pink Gaza Freedom March and hunger strike? Well that wasn’t the first either.

Remember when Egypt attacked the peaceful Code Pink marchers? Remember how Egypt blocks convoys from entering Gaza, usually when they reach Al Arish, where they play their little games with the convoys.

Regarding Egypt, remember how we never see any Egyptians organising “on the street” rallies in support for their Palestinian neighbours suffering under an illegal siege? Notice how there is NO outward sympathy or solidarity being displayed by the Egyptian public or Egyptian politicians? Well that actually WAS a First!

What am I talking about? Get ready for a shock….. I‘m talking about how much Egypt has changed. Because those photos you viewed above are ACTUALLY photos of Egyptians holding various rallies for Gaza and also a rally at Al Arish when they were blocked (like Viva Palestina) whilst taking a convoy into Gaza, also they held a hunger strike during the course of one of the TWENTY-FIVE convoys they took into Gaza!!! You may want to re-read that sentence after the shock wears off.

I’m asking what has happened to Egyptians. I’m asking this because it was an Egyptian Convoy that broke the siege first, and it was Egyptians who organised the first solidarity March to Rafah. And it was Egyptians who first staged a hunger strike in solidarity with the people of Gaza. And it was Egyptians who first organised themselves en masse to help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza. Don’t believe me? Well check this out:
Link The Egyptian Popular Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian Uprising (the "Lagna") was created on the 12th of September 2000, two weeks after the second Intifada started. At first, 360 intellectuals and public personalities signed a fundamental text stating the main objectives of the "Lagna". It is aimed to gather all representatives and activists of the Egyptian civil society, the professional unions, the political parties. For four years now, it has been coordinating and organizing collective actions of solidarity.

It started with two petitions: The first one was addressed to the Egyptian President Husni Mubarak and stated the urge to cut diplomatic and economic relations with Israel. The second one was presented to Kofi Anan, general secretary of the United Nations, and asked for the application of the UN resolutions and the protection of the Palestinian people. These two petitions collected more than 100,000 signatures.

The "Lagna" started first in Cairo but the mobilization and the solidarity network have spread all over Egypt, in the Delta region in particular. Today, the "Lagna" has 12 local committees in the country which organize concerts, exhibitions, meetings and political rallies.

In four years, the "Lagna" has organised 25 convoys of medicine and food, for a total cost of 15 millions of Egyptian pounds. Each convoy is an act of popular and political solidarity, coordinated by a delegation of the "Lagna", whose members are representatives of the Civil society in Egypt.

When convoys were blocked at the border, protests turn into sit-in in front of the Red Crescent office, the UN office and the ministry of Foreign Affairs. A hunger strike was held for ten days, in order to pressure the officials and lift the ban on the convoy.

The "Lagna" helps also the wounded Palestinians who are treated in Cairo Hospitals. It provides them with money, medicine and housing..
So have you picked yourself up off the floor yet? There’s even more. Witness their last effort in 2004 and note the similarities to the Code Pink March just this January:
Link As the Palestinian Intifada enters into its fifth year of existence, the Palestinian people continue to suffer the most inhumane and cruel living conditions. The killing of Palestinian martyrs continues, and so does the demolition and destruction of Palestinian houses, infrastructure and agricultural land through the systematic, barbaric and murderous crimes committed by the Israeli occupation army, including the last attack on Jabalia and the Gaza strip where more than 110 Palestinians were killed - including a large number of children, and hundreds were injured.

In protest to those tragic conditions and in solidarity with the Intifada of the Palestinian people, supporting the heroic resistance of the Palestinian people, its right to self determination and its Right to Return, the Egyptian Popular Committee in Solidarity with the Palestinian Uprising calls upon all intellectuals, activists, human rights and civil society organizations, anti-globalisation and antiwar activists to share in the protest rally in front of the Rafah crossing on the 10th of December 2004.

The choice of the 10th of December is not insignificant. This date carries the anniversary of the launching of the International Declaration for Human Rights. Our protest rally, organized on the anniversary of that day is an attempt to remind the world of the values which that declaration carried, and to express our protest regarding the continuous and systematic violation of those human rights values by the barbaric Israeli military in the occupied Palestinian territories.

We invite all activists of the world, all those who struggle against the ugliness of war and the violations of human rights of peoples to join us in front of the Rafah Crossing on December the 10th, 2004
So this has left me with a few gnawing questions.. Firstly what in the name of GOD has happened to the population in Egypt! Clearly they are capable of helping the Palestinians. Clearly within their society they have hundreds and thousands of people who are capable of organizing and carrying off massive events to aid people trapped in the open air prison Israel has created and they would NOT be alone, as WE would happily JOIN with them! Imagine the scale of events that could take place if we ALL worked together. We could make a difference alongside the people of Egypt and the WORLD would listen and take note! Clearly they once cared, clearly they once “took on” Mubarak and petitioned him to help. Clearly they were so outraged at what was happening that they were forced to act due to their human conscience.

Clearly the Egyptian people could rise again to take on this humanitarian cause, to help make right an illegal wrong, to save a human life, to show the world they are not controlled and owned by Israel and the West. So that leaves the most important question of the day. What has happened to the Egyptians, why don’t they care anymore?

Egypt once showed the world how great their people were, how they cared, how they were committed to not simply standing by to allow all this suffering in Gaza. As witnessed in these photos below:

MASSIVE PROTESTS TODAY

Loads going on today. I was informed late last night that the Freedom Marchers in Cairo were planning a huge event this morning, and it has begun. Here's the morning rundown so far: There is a worldwide protest at all Egyptian Embassies today. Info on the one taking place in London is being reported at JewsSansFrontieres
Picket at the Egyptian Embassy
Thursday 31st December
1.00pm – 3.00pm
26 South Street, London, W1K 1DW, off Park Lane, Marble Arch/Hyde Park Corner Underground stations
Also in Canada you can read about that on Facebook here (you must be logged in) Here in Ireland there are various protests and candle light vigils. I'll be attending a small one today as I am driving up to Derry for that event. Will post photos later today.

In Egypt:
the Gaza Freedom Marchers have assembled for a massive protest in Egypt,in what has now become known as "Gaza Square" There has been some trouble with reports of cameras being smashed and a few people beaten and knocked down. You can read about Hedy Epstein here. She is there still going strong. bless. And this tweet made me laugh:
TankaBar: #GFM #GAZA took 3 cops to push one lakota jew down the street. haha "you basterds are lucky im a pacifist and dont know how to fight!"
I love the American Indians, during the Irish famine imposed by Britain millions of Irish died, when Ireland's people were starving and dying, being found dead with grass stains on their mouths, the American Indians sent us corn. They rock!! You can follow him here. This just in:
Gaza Freedom Marchers are discussing spending new years eve on streets of Cairo. Message: end the siege, free Gaza.
In Israel:
Marchers are assembling at the Erez crossing, you can view some photos here. Also if you scroll down you can view photos of what's going on in Egypt as well.

EGYPT ATTEMPTS TO STOP MARCHERS FROM STANDING OUTSIDE OWN EMBASSY

What's that you say Olmert old buddy, old pal. best friend? You want I should stop those pesky marchers and that Galloway Convoy from focusing world attention on your war crimes? Okee Dokee, you got it buddy! Anything for you
........

Egypt attempts to stop foreigners from standing outside their OWN Embassies……..

Hey Mubarak, your fear and paranoia is showing, not to mention your collaboration with Israel against Arabs and Muslims. Here’s a little irony; While Americans focus their self righteous outrage on Iran, calling for democracy, supporting the right to protest and gather against "oppressive governments." I find it “amusing” that we hear not one peep from America about the SAME tactics being used by Egypt against not ONLY Egyptian Students, but ALSO Americans and many other nationalities currently experiencing the “Special Egyptian/Israeli Hospitality” Go figure……..Nah, never mind answered mi own question there, you see, where Egypt is concerned it’s all at the behest of Israel, so all that heavy handedness is encouraged and absolutely allowed. America welcomes it, even against its own citizens. Whereas in Iran, it’s all different, isn’t it? Oh, sorry no it’s not different in Iran because Israel and America are behind the violence there as well. So I guess that makes Egypt equal to Iran, where US/Israel meddling is concerned. There, now I feel much better.

So, we already know the Naz-esque tactics Egypt is meting out to groups of marchers from around the world, not to mention the aggression and threats directed to Egyptian students who dared to show solidarity with the marchers AND Palestine. From Egyptian spies infiltrating the groups of marchers, to house arrest, restricting Internet access, restricting free movement within Egypt, not allowing foreigners to meet in groups larger than 6 people, massive police and military presences, threatening marchers, and the removal of basic civil rights and lastly beatings. But now they go one step further and are now attempting to prevent people from standing in front of their own embassy? Seriously Egypt WTF? Are you THAT much under the control of your masters Israel? What an absolute disgrace you are to the Arab world. Here’s the latest Nazi-esque Tactics:
linkThose activists did not respect their commitment as they entered Egypt with tourist visas and carried out political activism by organizing a march (Hey America, don't say ONE word about Iran..........EVER!)
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

Zaki said that the activists were notified in advance that the march would be prohibited but they stood on the sidewalk in front of the French embassy, adding that Egyptian security forces are now there to secure the area.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)
Standing in front of YOUR own countries Embassy is now verboten!!

Punishing Egyptian students and threatening them AND the marchers, placing people under house arrest, restricting travel within Egypt, the government cancelling bus contracts and business arrangements made by Americans. And just look at the Egyptian/Israeli effort that went into attempting to stop the marchers:
link We have obviously accomplished our objective. The jailers have taken notice and are running scared. So scared that we not only have been denied entry into Gaza, we have been threatened with arrest and deportation if we so much as carry a sign or gather in groups of more than six.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

Our reservation with a facility in downtown Cairo for an orientation meeting for delegates was cancelled at the government’s order and requests to hold educational workshops instead were refused.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

In an even more audacious move that was aided and abetted by participants’ own governments, consulate representatives were called to a meeting and apparently instructed to warn their residents not to come.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

In Spain, that warning was echoed in a news release. In Canada, individuals registered for the march or who had participated in past delegations received emails from their embassies. In Portugal, one marcher was called on his personal cell phone!
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

As I write this, we are still being refused entry to Gaza, and even permission to travel to Al-Arish and Rafah.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

Thirty-eight of our marchers tried to get to Al Arish on their own, but 30 were then put under house arrest in their hotel and eight were detained at the bus station.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

When the legal support group held a candlelight vigil, they were surrounded by a phalanx of heavily armed Egyptian police.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

Two marchers said they were beaten when they tried to join their comrades.
(Sieg Heil Mubarak!)

Meanwhile, when marchers tried to (peacefully) commemorate the Israeli invasion of Gaza (exactly one year ago today) by tying hundreds of strings with notes, poems, art and the names of 1,400 killed to the Kasr Al Nil Bridge , the security police broke it up. (Sieg Heil Mubarak!)
Seriously Egypt SHAME ON YOU!

GAZA FREEDOM MARCH MESSAGES FROM WITHIN

Egyptian Oppression
Egyptian Students attempting to join the Gaza Freedom Marchers were beaten and forbidden to join the marchers. Members of this blog have friends on both the Gaza Freedom March and the Viva Palestina Convoy. They are ALL on Hunger Srike. We’ve been keeping up with Political Theatrics AKA (iRevolt) on twitter. They are in Egypt now on the Gaza Freedom March. I thought I’d post some tweets here, they span from entering Egypt to being stranded, and all things in between. I’ve left a link at the end of this post so you can follow them if you wish. They are all still there and still attempting to enter Gaza.

UNDER HOUSE ARREST~EGYPT BECOMES THE WEST BANK

UPDATED Marchers under "House Arrest"
All those Gaza 2010 Freedom marchers may not be able to see Gaza, but they are getting a first hand look at what life is like in the West Bank of Palestine, from inside Egypt.

How is that you ask? Well, Egypt has become just like the West Bank! The only difference is the Palestinians, in this case are the Peace marchers from around the world, all nationalities. And the IDF security force is being played very accurately by none other than the Egyptians. Checkpoints, detentions, no freedom of movement, it's all there. See for yourself:
link Egyptian security forces detained 38 participants of the Gaza Freedom March from a hotel in Al-Arish on Sunday at noon, according to a statement issued by the event's organizers.

"Egyptian security forces detained a group of 30 internationals in their hotel in Al-Arish and another group of eight at the bus station. They also broke up a memorial action commemorating the Cast Lead massacre at the Kasr An-Nil Bridge," the statement asserted.

The detainees include Spanish, French, British, American and Japanese nationals. Another group of eight people, including American, British, Spanish, Japanese and Greek citizens, were detained at Al-Arish bus station in the afternoon of 27 December, the organizers said.

"The Egyptian security forces eventually yielded, letting most of the marchers leave the hotel, but did not permit them to leave the town. When two younger delegates, a French and Japanese woman, attempted to leave Al-Arish, the Egyptian authorities stopped their taxi and unloaded their luggage," it stated.

Meanwhile, in Cairo, Egyptian security police broke up a commemoration ceremony marking the anniversary of the Israeli invasion of Gaza organized by the Gaza Freedom March at the Kasr An-Nil Bridge.

"As a nonviolent way of commemorating the more than 1,300 Palestinians killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza that began a year ago on December 27, 2008, Gaza Freedom Marchers tied hundreds of strings with notes, poems, art and the names of those killed to the bridge," the group said.

“We’re saddened that the Egyptian authorities have blocked our participants’ freedom of movement and interfered with a peaceful commemoration of the dead,” said Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK, one of the March’s organizers.

Benjamin added that the Gaza Freedom March participants are continuing to urge the Egyptian government to allow them to proceed to Gaza.

They visited the Arab League asking for support, various foreign embassies and the Presidential Palace to deliver an appeal to President Mubarak. They are calling their supporters around the world to contact Egyptian embassies and urge them to free the marchers and allow them to proceed to Gaza, the statement concluded.
AND MUCH MORE. It appears people from Spain are being harrassed, detained and under "house arrest"
link At a hotel in el-Arish, Egyptian security placed around 30 people, mostly citizens of Spain, under effective house arrest after they attempted to leave for the Rafah border crossing, which is about 30 minutes outside el-Arish. Two delegates staying in the hotel attempted to take a taxi to the border, but were stopped and ordered back. 8 seperate international delegates were also taken off a bus right outside el-Arish, and detained at a bus stop for over two hours. The eight delegates, including ones from the United States, France, and Turkey, were eventually allowed to enter the town, but the hotel where they are staying is swarmed with Egyptian security
In only one day Egypt becomes the West Bank, and who says miracles never happen.................

TIME TO BRING THE BDS CAMPAIGN TO EGYPT

“Team Egypt”

Egypt has been sitting on the fence for a year, trying to placate all sides, trying to do a massive high wire balancing act by allowing some aid in, and sending the majority of aid to Israel where it disappears as gifts to those who occupy, oppress and murder at will. Allowing a few convoys and delegations into Gaza, whilst blocking the majority of others. Waging a war of “attrition” on convoy members who are forced to wait for weeks in Egypt until their money runs out and they are forced to abandon their aid. This then becomes a “free gift” for Egypt or Israel. Stealing the “good will” of the world’s population who fund these aid convoys and mocking the humanity that stands against Genocide and supports international law. People and companies who donated aid should file lawsuits against Egypt and demand compensation for their possessions.

But now Egypt has finally made its decision, Egypt has now picked sides. Upon the 1 year Anniversary of the Gaza Genocide, it has become very clear over the past week where Egypt’s sympathies lie. Not with their Muslim brothers and sisters inside Gaza who are suffering every day, not with the vast majority of the worlds population who fund aid convoys to help them, not with the Human Rights Organisations who condemn the illegal siege, not with Richard Goldstone’s report, in short, not with humanity.

Instead, where Egypt has placed its sympathy and support is with Israel and the US. For Egypt has become complicit in assisting and committing War Crimes against their fellow Muslims in Gaza. Egypt stands against humanity and Egypt stands against those of us who want to share humanity with those suffering in Gaza.

Given Egypt’s choice to stand against Humanity and FOR Oppression, murder and racism, they can no longer be seen as being outside this conflict. As such, they should now be treated exactly like the other members of “Team Egypt” and the world should now target Egypt with the same BDS campaign that is directed at Israel. Here’s why:

1. Egypt builds Apartheid wall against it’s Muslim brothers and sisters with assistance of US military and at the behest of Israel, to further strangle Gaza Civilian population, thus causing more deaths due to the illegal siege.

2.Egypt closes border to Gaza 2010 Marchers

And on the heels of world outrage directed at Egypt, shortly thereafter Israel lends some fake “Credence” to their Egyptians slaves, by dropping leaflets into Gaza threatening another invasion on the Anniversary. This is all a ruse to give Egypt an excuse to close the border and secondly, it allows Egypt to lay the “blame” for the border closure on Israel. Nice collusion hasbara.

3. Then they turn to the Viva Palestina Convoy, now stranded in Jordan given an impossible task by Egypt. They have been asked to fold up the 200 plus vehicles and personnel into a neat little suitcase and send it on an logistically impossible route in order to “enter” Gaza. There now, Egypt off the hook once again. More after this:

As it is now very clear that Egypt is working with the Americans and Israel, they can NO longer be considered to be outside the parameters of War Crimes. Just as the US supplied the DIME missiles and White Phosphorous, So Egypt is facilitating the illegal siege causing more death. Time to call for a worldwide Boycott of Egypt.....NOW!
