SCORE ONE FOR THE GOOD GUYS

A group of radical activists who broke into an arms factory near Brighton last year causing damage of up to £180,000 ($275,000) were acquitted by a British court last week after a jury found them not guilty of causing criminal damage.

In a lawsuit which began last October, seven British activists claimed they were legally justified to break in and sabotage the factory of EDO MBM Technology near Brighton, the south coast of England, in January 2009, at the time of Operation Cast Lead.

Believing that the company was breaking export license regulations and exporting arms components to Israel, the activists, heralding from a group called “Smash EDO”, said they wanted to “slow down” the manufacture of components that were allegedly being sold to Israel.

The protesters threw computers and filing cabinets out of the factory windows and smashed machinery using hammers claiming they were seeking to prevent “Israeli war crimes in Gaza.”

The seven admitted breaking in and causing the damage but were acquitted after the jury found them not guilty of conspiring to cause criminal damage, despite also video-taped interviews of the activists which outlined their intention to cause criminal damage and “smash up” the factory.

The activists used the “lawful excuse” tactic as defense – committing an offense to prevent a more perceived serious crime because EDO was “complicit in war crimes.”

Judge George Bathurst-Norman told the jury: “You may well think that hell on earth would not be an understatement of what the Gazans suffered in that time.”

EDO managing director Paul Hills denied in court that the company supplied components to Israel but said they did make parts for F-16 planes.

Judge George Bathurst-Norman said that, despite Hill’s denials, it was clear that there was enough evidence to the contrary and said that the certificates required for arms export licenses were “not worth the paper they are written on” as they can be easily manipulated.

According to The Guardian, the judge highlighted the testimony by Green Party MP and anti-Israel activist Caroline Lucas who had tried to justify the action by saying “all democratic paths had been exhausted and, crucially, that their actions were driven by the responsibility to prevent further suffering in Gaza.”

Israel’s ambassador to Britain, Ron Prosor said that this was not a great era for the British justice system.

“After reading the judge's statement, there is no doubt that this is not a great era of the British justice system. I assume that Sderot's children, who have lived under thousands of missiles, for years, will be able to enlighten the judge as to the meaning of “hell on earth”.

“I am convinced that the judge would have ruled differently had he been sitting in the Sderot youth cultural center, rather than on Brighton's sunny shores,” the ambassador said.

“Bigotry does not merely cause pain and suffering to its victims, it degrades its perpetrators from within. The rule of law itself is now under threat in Britain, and judges and juries are applauding as it goes,” Shepherd said.

After verdict, one of the activists, Robert Nicholls, 52, told the Guardian: “I’m joyful really, at being a free man...we just wanted to do something that would make a real difference to the people of Palestine.”

“I’ve felt very peaceful all the way through the trial because I'm proud of what I've done. It was the right thing to do,” another activist, Ornella Saibene, 50, said.

“We’re very happy that a jury of ordinary people confronted with the facts recognised that our actions were justified,” Saibene told the Bristol Evening News. “Presented with the facts of what was going on in Palestine they have backed our action. It's a victory for justice and for both British and Palestinian people.”

On Friday, two more of the activists were acquitted Elijah Smith, 42, and Chris Osmond, 30.

Osmond, an anti-Israel activist from a group called 'Boycott Israeli Goods', said the destruction was because of EDO’s “illegal supply of weapons” to Israel.

Prior to the attack, Smith said on the group’s website that he was going to going to “smash up the factory to the best of my ability.”

“I don't feel I'm going to do anything illegal tonight, but I'm going to go into an arms factory and smash it up to the best of my ability so that it cannot actually produce munitions and these very dirty bombs that have been provided to the Israeli army so that they can kill children. The time for talking has gone too far. I'm not a writer, I'm just a person from the community and I'm deeply disgusted,” Smith said.

Smash EDO campaign spokesperson Chloe Marsh accused Israel of committed “genocide” and called for EDO directors to be tried for war crimes.

“The citizens of Britain are no longer prepared to stand idly by whilst Israel commits genocide with the backing of our own government. Brighton is a peace messenger city. EDO is an obscenity that must be removed from Brighton and the directors of this foul company ought to be tried for war crimes by the International Criminal Court,” she articulated.

link Israel set up three massive white tents at its main southern seaport on Thursday to hold hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists who hope to breach Israel's 3-year blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The activists are headed toward Gaza's waters on board a flotilla carrying 10,000 tons of supplies. Israel says it won't let the eight boats reach Gaza's shores, and that it will deport or imprison the activists aboard.

The military said it would divert the boats to the Israeli port at Ashdod, where the activists will be taken into the tents for identification and medical attention.

Officials said 40 buses will be on hand to ferry them to Israel's international airport for deportation or to a nearby prison if they refuse to be deported voluntarily.

"We want to do this as quick and efficiently as possible," said Maya Kadosh, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.

Israeli authorities said they will make every effort to avoid using force, but they were prepared for a military confrontation if necessary.

Israel claims it no longer occupies Gaza, that it withdrew in 2005. Yet Israel controls all aspects and blocks international humanitarian aid from traveling to Gaza or entering Gaza via open international waters. Israeli Lies Exposed again!

The largest-ever sea convoy aimed at breaking the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip will take off for the coastal enclave in three phases, IMEMC reported last week.

Palestinian legislator and Popular Committee Against the Siege chairman Jamal El Khodary said at a press conference last Thursday that the first ship in the convoy will leave Ireland for Greece May 12. Eight ships will sail from Greece to Turkey on May 22, and those ships are set to reach Cyprus May 26. The entire convoy will sail to Gaza May 27.

El Khodary said the Free Gaza Movement "Freedom Flotilla" is determined to sail to Gaza's shore no matter what, and he said the ships will be outfitted with sufficient supplies should they be surrounded by the Israeli Navy.

Free Gaza cofounder Mary Hughes Thompson said of the May voyage:

“Although we were happy with the first trips, it was bitter-sweet, knowing that our small boats and symbolic amounts of relief paled in comparison to what was really needed in Gaza. Now, we finally feel we are helping to organize a powerful action, one with the potential to translate into a sustained campaign of much more effective challenges to Israel's brutal siege.”

The heart of the convoy will be a cargo ship sponsored by donors from Malaysia and outfitted with cargo form Ireland, Scotland and Britain among others countries.

link Irish activist and documentarian Tommy Donnelan, 63, was this afternoon wounded and detained for two hours by the Israeli Military in the West Bank.

While filming a non-violent protest against the role of Irish cement multinational CRH in building Israel's apartheid wall in the village of Bil'in, Mr. Donnellan was rushed by an Israeli snatch-squad of 4 or 5 soldiers. His throat and shirt were grabbed, his gas mask was torn off, and after being wrestled to the ground he was arrested. During the arrest he sustained a 3 inch gash to his right leg and was bleeding hevaily from his left ear, from which a piece was torn off. About two hours later he was released without charge.

Speaking after his release, Mr. Donnellan stated: "Thank the Lord I'm ok now. I've lost a chunk of my ear - but not my dignity. I was plainly in the role of journalist, videoing the proceedings, I should not have been arrested, especially in such a violent manner."

Mr. Donnellan continued: "This is yet another example of the impunity and inhumanity with which the Israli occupation forces operate on a daily basis. It is also shines an unflattering light of the shameful activities of the Irish cement company CRH, who are directly involved in the building of this monstrous wall and thus complicit in what happened to me today, and in the regular human rights abuses - including murder of anti-Wall activists - by the Israeli military in Bil'in and elsewhere."

Every Friday afternoon residents of the West Bank village of bil'in, along with Israeli and International activists stage a non-violent protest against the construction of the Wall on their land.

Today's demonsration focused on the role CRH plays in the building of the Wall - CRH owns 25% of Israel's sole cement company, (Mashav) Nesher Cement. Palestinians led the demonstration - carring placards calling on CRH to divest from its Israeli cement subsidiary - to the spot where 31-year-old Bil'in resident Bassem Abu Rahmah was killed by the Israeli military last year.

At this spot, Mr. Iyad Burnat, coordinator of the Bil'in Popular Committee, addressed CRH dirctely saying "You are complicit in the murder and killing of my friend Bassem, and all the other non-violent activists that have been killed and injured for resisting this horrendous wall. CRH is directly implictict. I, as a Palestinian, am asking the Irish people to join the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and get involved in the divestment campaign against CRH. This complicity must end."

This year the CRH Annual General Meeting starts at 11am Wednesday May 5th, in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road in Dun Laoghaire. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) is organising a protest outside. We will be assembling at at 10.15am at the Catholic church plaza.

Today a small rocket was fired into Israel (by a handful of dissidents) and a Thai agricultural worker died as a result, this is very sad for the innocent man, however it is not a reason to once again bomb thousands of innocent Gazan civlians. But, for Israel this is a “Win Win” situation and now Israel can order air strikes on thousands of innocent Gazans, such a deal! Never mind that the Government of Gaza, Hamas, has not fired any rockets and in fact has been dealing with these radical Al-Qaeda sympathizers, who are not only a threat to Israel, but also to Hamas and the population of Gaza. So Israel’s reaction will of course be to wipe our more innocent people for the actions of a handful of dissidents that the Government in Gaza isnot part of. If that had been done here in Ireland during the Peace Process, there never would have BEEN a “process.” After the IRA and British ceasefire was in place, a group of dissidents carried out THIS bombing in 1998 where not 1, but 29 people were killed. Still both sides stayed the course for peace, rode out the rough times, and today look where we are. But then we all know Isarel is not in the business of making peace, only war:

link A rocket attack into Israel claimed by an Islamist militant group underlines a growing challenge to the Hamas movement that rules Gaza and has been trying to crack down on Al-Qaeda-inspired factions.

The attack, which killed a Thai man working on a farm just inside Israel, embarrassed Hamas as UN officials in Gaza hosted the European Union's foreign affairs chief, a rare visit by such a senior Western official to the blockaded territory.

Analysts say the groups, which identify with Al-Qaeda but have no organizational links to it, do not pose an immediate threat to Hamas's rule over Gaza but are likely to remain a thorn in its side for some time to come.

The groups are accused of orchestrating a series of bomb attacks targeting Christian churches, Internet cafes and most recently Hamas security men and offices.

The assassins of senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, who was found dead January 20 in Dubai, traveled to the Gulf country using Irish passports.

Up to seven people were said to have been involved in Mabhouh's killing, four of whom used Irish passports to enter Dubai

And so now it turns out that that the Irish government says they were completely and utterly fake.

Hit squads dispatched by Israel's Mossad spy agency have used foreign passports in the past, notably in 1997 when agents entered Jordan on Canadian passports and bungled an attempt to kill Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal with poison.

In the most recent publicized case linking the Mossad to foreign identity papers, two suspected Israeli agents were jailed in New Zealand in 2005 for obtaining that country's passports illegally.

In 1987, Britain protested to Israel about what London called the misuse by Israeli authorities of forged British passports and said it received assurances steps had been taken to prevent future occurrences.

So here’s my question to the world, what if this were Iran? What if Iranians, scurried into some country, murdered someone using fake American passports, then got away. WWAD, that stands for “What Would America Do” Why immediately call sanctions, perhaps invade, run to the UN and cry, call for a world wide tightening of security for anyone traveling with an Iranian passport, enact border checks of all foreign Iranian looking people, and so on….

And now here’s my suggestion to the world: It’s time to step up to the plate here and start looking closely at people with Israeli passports and Israelis with dual citizenship. At airports Israelis should be scrutinized and double checked before entry. If Israel is going to “use” the good names of countries like Ireland to commit murder, then they do not deserve entry into Ireland, which is a neutral country. Until Israel stops all criminal activity and apologizes to Ireland then all Israelis should be banned from entry and the Embassy closed down. It’s time for countries to outlaw dual citizenship with Israel. If you want to live in Israel then you become an Israeli citizen and give up your former country, end of. If you want to lay down with Israeli dogs, then enjoy the fleas.

link In two separate attacks, Israeli tanks invaded on Monday areas close to the northern and southern Gaza Israeli borders.

The first invasion took place on Monday morning when tanks and bulldozers rolled into farm lands near Khan Younis town southern Gaza.

Witnesses said that tanks opened fire at resident homes while bulldozers damaged crops. No injuires were reported.

Later in the day another group of Israeli tanks and bulldozers invaded the Biet Hannon town in northern Gaza Strip.

Tanks fire shells at resident homes while bulldozers uprooted trees and damaged crops; witnesses reported damage but no injuries.

During a similar attack on Saturday Israeli shells killed three civilians at the town of Biet Hannon.
