In 2010, Jews in Israel and around the world will celebrate Passover beginning on March 30th. Passover is the seven-day holiday of the Feast of Unleavened Bread commemorating the ancient Hebrews’ escape from enslavement in Egypt. (In Israel, March 30th is also Land Day: the day when Palestinians commemorate and protest the confiscation of their lands by the Israeli government; but that’s another story.)
As I’m learning, the Passover holiday begins with the Seder, a traditional ceremonial meal. Its centerpiece is a special Seder plate containing six symbolic foods. Each has its own significance in the retelling of the story of the Hebrews’ exodus from Egypt. The stack of three matzos, or unleavened bread, a kind of cracker made of plain white flour and water, has its own separate plate on the Seder table.
For each of the six traditional items on the Seder plate (as per Wikipedia and the Chabad website) —listed here by its Hebrew name—I note its traditional symbolic role and offer an additional, alternative interpretation. I hope my alternative can help Jews around the world, and especially in Israel, connect with a broader perspective on the meaning of Passover right here, right now, in the land that became the eventual endpoint of that ancient exodus.
Maror and Chazeret — Bitter herbs, symbolizing the bitterness and harshness of the slavery which the Jews endured in Egypt. Slavery: severe curtailment of one’s freedom. Today, one and a half million Palestinians in Gaza are tasting the bitterness of unfreedom, hermetically sealed in their encircled enclave with no end in sight. Sixty percent are under the age of 16. The Jewish citizens of Israel have hardened their hearts to this reality and they have expected the rest of the world’s Jews to do likewise. For how long will you wait for Palestinians to vanish?
Charoset — A coarse mixture of chopped nuts, apples or dates, and wine, meant to symbolize the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt. Today, Israel permits no mortar, or cement, or any other building materials, to enter Gaza. Let them sleep in tents! This, after last winter’s assault on Gaza, internationally documented war crimes (and possibly crimes against humanity), causing over 1,400 deaths in 22 days between December 2008 and January 2009– leaving scores homeless in the rubble. Is this the freedom Moses envisioned? The freedom to attack civilians with the tanks, planes and warships of the “Jewish” State? Doesn’t sound very Jewish to me. Not at all.
Karpas — A vegetable other than bitter herbs, dipped into salt water (which represents tears) to recall the pain felt by the Jewish slaves in Egypt. Tears! Pain! In your name, my Jewish friends, Israel continues its inhuman siege on Gaza. The folks there shed tears as salty as anyone’s; their pain is beyond description. Two of every three of today’s Gaza residents originally lost their homes in what is now Israel when the state was established. Six decades later, they find themselves living a nightmare, a kind of living death: their economy in ruins, their neighborhoods in ruins, their educational and health systems in ruins, even their sanitation systems in ruins. Israel refuses to allow reconstruction. What comes after stripping Gazans from their last remaining sense of sanity?
Z’roa — A roasted lamb shankbone (or a chicken wing, or chicken neck) symbolizes the paschal sacrifice offered originally on the eve of the exodus and later in the Temple in Jerusalem. Sacrifice! Do you insist on sacrificing the possibility of a sustainable future for modern Israel in the name of its founding myth – since discredited – that Palestine was “a land without people, for a people without a land”? A million of today’s Gazans are from the families that Israel expelled. Gazans have remained steadfast under conditions even the early Hebrews might have found intolerable in Egypt. Gazans, together with all Palestinians, are the people that Jews in Israel are destined to live with, today, tomorrow, and forever. The only uncertainty is how much more hate will be generated by military occupation and armed assault before a process of shared rehabilitation can begin.
Beitzah — A hard-boiled egg, symbolizing the main festival sacrifice that was offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night. The egg is a symbol of mourning. Eggs are the first thing served to mourners after a Jewish funeral. The egg on the Seder plate evokes the mourning over the destruction of the Temple and the subsequent inability to offer sacrifices there in honor of the Pesach holiday. Mourning! As Jews, you know a lot about mourning; consider the sixty-two years of mourning, consider every day of every one of those years, among the people–real people, with real names and real children—in Gaza and in squalid refugee camps all around Israel who can see their homeland with the naked eye, but are denied their basic human right of returning home. Sixty-two Passovers and counting. All I ask of you on this year’s holy day, as you contemplate the egg on the Seder plate, is to remember them, no more.
My Jewish sisters and brothers, you can continue to look away as Israel claims to speak and to act in your name. It kills and maims in your name. It dispossesses and occupies in your name. It talks peace and wages war in your name. If you turn a deaf ear to their mourning again this year, if you harden your heart again this year, if your voice is not raised this year in protest – then you are acquiescing in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of another people, in your name. If you cannot see Palestinians as fully human now, you will hear them trying to give voice to their humanity in your nightmares, year after year, until you can see and until you can hear.
It is written in the Talmud: We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are. I urge you, while you commemorate the Hebrews’ ancient slavery and deliverance, to see yourselves finally as equals in this world: equal with your neighbors, neither their masters nor their slaves. I urge you to see yourself and your children in the image of every Palestinian mother, father and child in Gaza. Let this year be the year of your shared redemption!

A stormy exchange took place between Arab and Jewish legislators in the Knesset House committee after the parliament’s presidency rejected the request by Arab Knesset member Taleb A-Sana for a debate in the plenum on last month’s assassination of Hamas militant Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
Mr A-Sana, (who just happens to be a lawyer no less, how's that for being an uppity Arab!) from the United Arab List party, argued that the Knesset should discuss the issue because there was no doubt it was of public concern.
“Is assassinating in another country using mafia methods a victory? It was an act of terror. They were caught red-handed in Dubai,” Mr A-Sana said. “Every movement, including the glasses, was captured. Whoever is behind this should be prosecuted.”
Fellow United Arab List Knesset member Ahmed Tibi told the committee that the real hero of the affair was the Dubai police chief who exposed the use of foreign passports by the alleged perpetrators.
Jewish members reacted angrily to the accusations from their Arab colleagues, calling Mr Tibi “Dubai’s ambassador to Israel.”

link OCCUPIED Jerusalem Mayor RACIST ZIONIST Nir Barkat on Thursday rejected municipal recommendations and cut funding for a toddler health-care center in OCCUPIED East Jerusalem, while approving aid to a similar center in a APARTHEID RACIST ZIONIST neighborhood.
The funds would have gone to opening a branch of the "Drop of Milk" (Tipat Halav) program, which provides prenatal and toddler health-care services in Silwan, an Arab neighborhood in OCCUPIED East Jerusalem.
Last year, authorities from the Jerusalem municipal offices recommended to the mayor to open the aid center in Silwan, which would service around 100,000 residents.
Authorities also recommended opening a similar center in a Jewish neighborhood that is home to around 7,000 residents.
During discussions on the 2010 budget, RACIST ZIONIST APARTHEID DIRECTOR Barkat decided to cut the aid that would open the center in Silwan while simultaneously approving the aid to open the same center in a Jewish neighborhood - a move that outraged residents of Silwan. Gal Einav, a non-religious soldier said there was wall-to-wall religious rhetoric in the base, the barracks and on the battlefield.

Israel's military has distanced itself from the publications, but they carried the army's official stamp.
'Religious duty'
I visited an orthodox Jewish seminary near Hebron in the West Bank. It is one of an increasing number of religious schools that encourage taking the Jewish Bible to the battlefield. All students at the seminary choose to serve in Israel's combat units while statistics suggest less ideologically-driven Israelis are avoiding them. This has made headline news in Israel.
The students' seminary is built in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank.
They are illegal under international law and Palestinians claim the territory as part of their future state. But for the religious soldiers the West Bank is part of land, given to the Jews by God.
Gal Einav thinks many soldiers will refuse to close settlements down.
The settlement issue could well tear the army apart, he told me, adding that most of his officers are settlers these days.
"If it comes to a clash between political orders from Israel's government and a contradictory message from the rabbis, settlers and religious right-wing soldiers will follow the rabbis," he said.
According to Reserve Gen Nehemia Dagan, what is happening in the army is far more dangerous than most Israelis realise: "We (soldiers) used to be able to put aside our own ideas in order to do what we had to do. It didn't matter if we were religious or from a kibbutz. But that's not the case anymore.
"The morals of the battlefield cannot come from a religious authority. Once it does, it's Jihad. I know people will not like that word but that's what it is, Holy War. And once it's Holy War there are no limits."
They say it perverts the true teachings of Judaism as well as contradicts Israel's military code. The way they view Palestinians who live here is likely to affect the way they use their power and their weapons. source

COHEN: “And I see you brought two friends along.” (The two men are sitting in club chairs across from each other in a den-like room. Two dogs are sitting in front of Alan Baker and jumping up for attention.) “Who’s this” (pointing to the shar-pei).
BAKER: “This is Harper. I’ve had her for about four years now.”
COHEN: “Harper? Did you name her after Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird?”
BAKER: “Nope—the prime minister. Despite the difference in sex, it seemed like the logical thing to do.” The four-legged one here (Baker starts petting Harper enthusiastically) doesn’t bark and is easy to please.”
COHEN: “Er, how do those factors relate to the two-legged Harper?”
BAKER: “The prime minister can absolutely be relied on not to make Israel look bad. No matter what news might get reported by anti-Israeli news hounds or other governments, Stephen doesn’t say anything. He’s absolutely loyal. It’s almost as if he doesn’t know any bad news is going on. (To Harper) Just like you, huh girl? Who doesn’t make a fuss, eh? Who’s a good dog! (Harper jumps up and licks Baker’s face repeatedly.)
COHEN: “That’s not very complimentary of the prime minister, though, is it?”
BAKER: “Sure it is! Canada doesn’t need to hear the story of how Israelis are killing Palestinians for their organs to sell on the black market. Just because some anti-Semitic Swedish newspaper chose to print this ‘blood libel’ doesn’t mean Harper has to give it credibility by talking about it. Also, when Israel threw two Arab families out of their homes in East Jerusalem where they had lived for 56 years, many in the world turned on Israel. Not Stephen! Not a peep.”
COHEN: “But these stories are true. Israel has been killing Palestinians for their organs, at least since 1992, and Israel has no right to any part of East Jerusalem. That’s Palestinian land under international law and…
BAKER: “True? False? International law? What’s the difference! If news makes Israel look bad it’s anti-Semitic!” (Baker is starting to get a little testy.)
COHEN: (changes tack fast) “So-o-o, Harper the shar-pei…she looks pretty healthy.”
BAKER: (calmed down) “Yes, we take good care of her. I stroke her regularly, give her treats when she's been especially good, and feed her a special food, the same one she had when she was a pup.”
COHEN: “Did you get her from a breeder?”
BAKER: “Yes, we went to B’nai Brith Kennels. They have an excellent record in breeding and developing dogs in Ottawa. All their animals are fed Hasbara, a food specially formulated to make them look good and feel good. B’nai Brith also spays and neuters all its animals and conducts rigorous obedience training.”
COHEN: “So she listens to you?”
BAKER: “Does she ever! She rolls over and plays dead on command, always keeps two steps behind me….”
COHEN: “I assume this trait is also analogous to the PM.”
BAKER: “Of course. What else but ‘obedient’ can you call a politician who puts Israel’s interests ahead of his own citizens’ constitutional rights? For example, Abousfian Abdelrazik, tortured in his native Sudan, was kept in the Canadian embassy for a year before being allowed to return home to Canada.
“Suaad Hagi Mohamud, a Toronto woman, was stopped at Nairobi’s airport because an official (chuckle!) didn’t think her lips matched her passport photo. Rather than help her, Harper upheld our policy of Muslim profiling and forced her to endure an 11-week ordeal and a DNA test to prove her identity.“Of course, Harper’s refusal to do anything to bring child soldier Omar Khadr home from Guantánamo is legendary.” (The other dog, a chihuahua, has been yipping throughout the interview and now Baker finally picks her up.) “Yes, Kenney, I see you, there! I haven't forgotten you!”
COHEN: “Kenney?! Do I have to ask?”
BAKER: “Probably not, but you might as well.”
COHEN: “Is she named after immigration minister Jason Kenney?”
BAKER: “Not exactly, She's named for the Jason Kennels, where we got her. It’s the small-dog subsidiary of B’nai Brith Kennels. Still, there are similarities with the minister.”
COHEN: “Such as?”
BAKER: “She’s very touchy and goes into barking hysterics at the least provocation. Quite the opposite of Harper, actually.”
COHEN: “How does that make her like Jason Kenney?”
BAKER: “Earlier this year, during Israel’s operation in Gaza, Khaled Mouammar, president of the Canadian Arab Federation, called Kenney a ‘professional whore who supports war.’ Kenney went barking mad! He went and cut off all federal funding to CAF. That was clearly an uncalled-for overreaction, but it's understandable. It just kills Kenney to hear anyone condemn Israel’s right to defend its homeland.”
COHEN: “But the concept of a ‘Jewish people’ was debunked by no less than an Israeli scholar Professor Shlomo Sand, so the idea of a Jewish ‘homeland‘ is logically fallacious.” (Kenney starts to growl and bark.)
BAKER: “See what happens when you upset Kenney?”
COHEN: “Indeed. Well that’s all the time we have. Thank you, Alan Baker, for being our guest. (They reach across and shake hands.) And thank you for bringing Harper and Kenney. It just proves that there’s no bitch like a political bitch. See you next time on Pet Politicians.”

(IsraelNN.com) Galilee farmers sold their lands to Persian Gulf tycoons, and protestors will gather on Thursday at the monument to Alexander Zaid - a man who gave his life for the sake of keeping the land Jewish.ROFLMAO
It was announced this week – less than a month after the Knesset narrowly passed the controversial lands privatization bill - that farmers in the northern Galilee had sold their land holdings to foreign elements.
The sums involved were significantly more than the assumed worth of the properties. In at least some of the cases, the money was traced back to elements in the Persian Gulf, in Arab countries that have no diplomatic relations with Israel.
The farmers say they were "forced" to sell because of their poor financial situations.
In protest, members of the “Task Force Against the Privatization of Israeli Lands” said they would ascend on Thursday to the statue of Alexander Zaid in Beit She’arim in the Galilee. Zaid, who was murdered by Arabs in 1938 while performing guard duty in his Galilee settlement, was a founder of two Jewish defense organizations aiming to safeguard the Jewish agricultural settlements in the Land of Israel. He also worked as a watchman, overseeing the lands of the JNF.
Local political leaders in the north expressed concern over the sales. Mevo’ot Hermon Regional Council head Benny Ben-Merhav said that dozens of dunams (quarter-acres) have been sold recently to foreign elements, and the mayor of Rosh Pina, Avihud Raski, said, “The farmers’ financial situation left them no choice. I raised the issue with the Jewish National Fund and the Israel Lands Authority, and I said that we have to establish a mechanism to ensure that our lands remain in Israeli hands – but they did nothing.”Gov't: Private Land is Not Our Business

Australian Jewish leaders are roiled over the awarding of the country’s only international peace prize to a staunch critic of Israel.
John Pilger, an award-winning Australian-born journalist and filmmaker living in London, will receive the Sydney Peace Prize in November.
Robert Goot, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, said it was a “sad day.”
New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies president Robin Margo said the decision was “a disgrace.”
The director of the Sydney Peace Foundation, Stuart Rees, said of Pilger, “His commitment to uncovering human rights abuses shines through his numerous books, films and articles. His work inspires all those who value peace with justice.”
Pilger said he hoped the award would inspire young journalists “to break the silences that perpetuate injustice both far away and close to home.”
Previous winners of the prize include South Africa Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson and Palestinian activist Hanan Ashrawi, whose award in 2003 sparked a storm of protest from the Jewish community.
In 2007 Pilger wrote that Israel and America had agreed to a “final solution” to the problem of the Palestinians. Earlier this year Pilger said that “Today’s holocaust-in-the-making … is in its final stages. The difference today is that it is a joint U.S.-Israeli project.”link
JERUSALEM — Israel has recalled one of its senior diplomats in the United States after the leaking of a warning he gave about the damage to ties caused by the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"Boston consul general Nadav Tamir has been recalled for consultations so he can clarify how one of his memos appeared in the media," foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.
On Thursday, the privately-owned Channel 10 television reported that Tamir had warned the ministry that the refusal of Netanyahu's right-leaning government to heed US requests to freeze settlement activity in the occupied West Bank was harming Israel's most important diplomatic relationship. source

In The Much Too Promised Land , a new account of US efforts to broker peace in the Middle East, Aaron David Miller, who advised both Republican and Democratic administrations, suggests Aipac may be less powerful than its critics believe and the group itself likes to pretend. The report of the All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into Antisemitism drew attention to five themes of antisemitic discourse: anti-Zionism; Holocaust denial and Holocaust related abuse; conspiracy theories; dual loyalty and the blood libel. This report combines them into one overarching theme- playing the Nazi card.
THE NAZI CARD
In the case of the United Kingdom, the All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism recommended that the working definition be “adopted by the government and law enforcement agencies”.
When the Nazi card is played against the Israeli State, its leaders, its military practices, or its founding ideology of Zionism, it is clearly antisemitic.
Four different variants of the problem are examined in the report:
- The Nazi card as abuse against Jews.
- The Nazi card as abuse against the collective memory of the Holocaust.
- The Nazi card in the casting of Jews as conspirators and collaborators with the Nazis.
- The Nazi card manifest in discourse about Israel and Zionism.
Each of these variants of the Nazi card has harmful consequences that constitute a significant common denominator and the rationale for why this type of discourse needs to be addressed. (note that Zionism is now included in the Definition)
GAZA PROTESTS:AND THIS WONT BE ALLOWED ANY MORE:
Placards carrying images of swastikas superimposed on the Star of David and the Israeli flag were commonplace in street-level protests about the recent Israeli military actions and the conflict in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009. Allusions between Nazi genocidal practices and the activities of the Israeli state were also drawn in some of the speeches at protest meetings and press commentary on the conflict.
Richard Falk, the then incoming United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, published an article in 2007 titled ‘Slouching toward a Palestinian Holocaust’ whereby, for instance, Palestinian territories have been compared to the “Warsaw ghetto”, Libya’s deputy UN ambassador, Ibrahim Dabbashi, reportedly drew a comparison between conditions in Gaza and the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. This occasion was not the first time officials associated with the UN had drawn parallels between Israeli military actions and atrocities committed by the Nazis.
UNDERSTANDING AND ADDRESSING ANTISEMITIC DISCOURSEYOU CANNOT CRITICIZE ZIONISM:
The project’s aims were to:
● Identify and illuminate the main component parts of antisemitic discourse.
● Include an examination of how criticism of Israel and Zionism can crossover into and become polluted by antisemitism through the expression or assumption of core antisemitic concepts.
THE CONSEQUENCES OF ANTISEMITIC DISCOURSE
This report attempts to shift the focus of analysis of contemporary antisemitism onto new ground: away from labelling and defining the problem to an understanding of the consequences of discourse against Jews, Israel and Zionism.
PLAYING THE NAZI CARD AGAINST ISRAEL AND ZIONISMCOLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ARE TARGETTED:
One of the most challenging components of antisemitic discourse in general, and the discursive theme of the Nazi card in particular, concerns the problem of when the Nazi card is played against Israel and its founding movement, Zionism.

● When the Nazi card is played as abuse against Jews individually or collectively, it involves a discursive and targeted hurtful act of raw explicit insult and potentially serves as a threat of future violence.
● When the Nazi card is played as abuse against the collective memory of the Holocaust, the offender ‘de-Nazifies’ the role of the Nazis and casts Jews as conspirators.So in the above statements they make it crystal clear, the “Holocaust” excuse will “never” end. In other words, there will never come a time when it can be viewed as a historical event, and there will never come a time when you can be critical of it, or have an opposing opinion of that historical event.
